T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 321

For the last official gathering of this 2011 calendar year, four flew in from the snow for a warm up and 16 minute uncalled set facing south (instead of east). There were no questions so we parted with hopes of a good break and holiday season for each other.

December 21, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 320

Upon (or very near, anyway) the solstice, three (mostly different) practitioners popped in for a 28 minute called set. This is the second to last set of the year.

There was a question and a demonstration of Fair Lady Works at Shuttles after the set.

December 20, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 319

Three popped in for a 17 minute set. Charlie led as I needed to be elsewhere.

December 19, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 318

Four fled the foul freezing sidewalks and together we went through a 19 minute uncalled set. One student had a revelation regarding his Empty/Solid stance, but that was the extent of the questions and comments.

December 18, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 317

Two tracked in to HEC 110 for a 16 minute uncalled set. I was a few minutes late and while I waited for anyone else to show up, I attempted to clean up some dust in front of the equipment closet (east wall near the south exit). After the set, we called it a morning and headed out.

December 17, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 316

Four followed me in for a 23 minute called set. Two of the people there were students from the University classes. After the set, we worked on some push-hands for about 15 minutes and I worked with the remaining student on deflection and blocking.

December 16, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 315

Four Finneganned in for a pleasant warm up but only three threw in their proverbial hats for a much smoother 21 minute uncalled set. Since no students looking for 'make-up' attendance attended, we decided to save the "called" set for another day, perhaps over the weekend.

After the set, I made comment on the height of the "outside middle block" in the second Turn and Kick with Heel in part two. My understanding is that it should only be the height of the shoulder.

This is my first attempt at using Blogger's (Google's) new posting interface. I have no complaints about it thus far. It seems to have what it needs in a fairly stark, no-frills way. I guess as long as it posts, it should be good. :-)

December 15, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 314

Three threw themselves in to a warm-up and a 21 minute set. The speed was a shade inconsistent between parts 1/2 and 3, but it was a good set none-the-less.

There were no questions.

December 14, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 313

Three thunked in for a 27 minute uncalled set. Over all, it was quite nice.

December 13, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 312

One warped in for a severely accelerated warm-up followed by a 3 minute and 15 second set. (The set was preceded by a 2 minute 'practice' prior to the real set. ;-)

After the set, I breathed and stood for about 5 minutes. Over-all, the practice was nice if a shade (understandably) underpopulated.

December 12, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 311

Three throttled their way in from the (relatively speaking) balmy temperatures to flow a 21 minute uncalled set. There were a few micro-toads at the end of part 2 and the beginning of part 3, but we all kept each other on track.

After the set, one student requested a brief review of four-corner push-hands. Push, Press vs. Roll-back, Ward-off.

December 11, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 310

Two toppled in to HEC 110 and started about 20 minutes late yet executed a very nice 19 minute set. There were brief comments following the set on execution of Part The Wild Horses Mane (foot pointing), Ward Off Left, (foot pointing and torso movement), and Punch Groin (thumb placement).

December 10, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 309

Two threaded their way through numerous parked pundits to practice a 23 minute set in HEC 110, although the warm-up was held in HEC 154 to allow other to practice in 110 briefly.

December 9, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 308

Although I could not make it today, one (not Charlie) practiced a 27 (?) minute called set.

December 8, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 307

Two tromped in for a 4 minute 34 second set followed by about 10 minutes of standing.

December 7, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 306

Although I could not attend, Charlie led three through a 29 minute set.

December 6, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 305

One walked in for a warm-up followed by an uncalled 3 minute 18 second set. After the set, standing meditation ensued for about 5 minutes.

December 5, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 304

Five frenzied in from the snow to warm up and flow through a 26 minute called set. After the set, there were questions on Snake Creeps Down regarding stance depth, etc. I also asked the remaining three students to go through Grasp Bird's Tail so I could make adjustments. By-in-large, the did well.

December 4, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 303

Four followed in for an 18 minute uncalled set. After the set, two had to fly while Charlie and I remained to practice staff. Three staff-sets later (in progressing vim and vigor), we wrapped up with about 9 minutes of standing meditation. It was a nice way to start the day.

December 3, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 302

Five frolicked in out of the freezing ice pellets and into HEC 110 where a pleasant warm-up was had followed by a 21 minute uncalled set. After the set I commented on width of stance on one student after their completion of Single Whip. There were then questions about Strike Tigers, the Second and Third Fair Lady Works at Shuttles, Turn and Chop and subsequently White Snake Puts Out Tongue.

After the questions, we worked on some applied T'ai Chi, specifically using a "Wave Hands Like Clouds" technique to block some focus pads. It went well.

December 2, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 301

Four started and three finished a 31 minute called set today. After the set, there were questions/observations on White Snake Spits out Tongue and Part the Wild Horses Mane.

December 1, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 300

Four flurried in for a 30 minute uncalled set this morning. After the set, there was a question the breathing for Carry Tiger, Return to Mountain and on Wave Hands Like Clouds. I went on to comment about the importance of staying low and level especially on the transitions between stances throughout the set.

November 30, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 299

Five froze in for a 29 minute uncalled set. There were questions after the set regarding Fair Lady Works at Shuttles.

November 29, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 298

Three were led by Charlie for a 13 minute uncalled set. I was not able to be present.

November 28, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 297

Three thimbled in for a 17 minute uncalled set. After the set, I chatted briefly about the importance if hip compression in positions like Needle at Sea Bottom (transition) and Fan Through Back (beginning). Before the set, I was asked if there was anyway we could start practicing actual blocks and the timing needed to deflect a real punch.

Occasionally, I get the feeling I'm on the wrong day. :-p

November 27, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 296

Three thudded in to HEC 110 for a delightful 19 minute called set. After the set, I chatted briefly about the importance if hip compression in positions like Needle at Sea Bottom (transition) and Fan Through Back (beginning). I did offer to work with those present on some blocks, but there didn't seem to be much interest.

November 26, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 295

Two tromped in from the drizzle to go through an unusual warm-up followed by a 17 minute called set. No further practice after that.

November 23, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 294

Three growled their way through a 20 minute uncalled set. After the set, I spoke briefly on the timing of the weight shift in Bend Bow, Shoot Tiger. This was for the benefit of both students.

November 22, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 293

Three threw themselves into an 8 minute set this morning. After the set, we enjoyed about 7 minutes of standing meditation. - It was very nice this morning. :-)

November 21, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 292

Three thlipped in for a 26 minute called set. Some among us seemed to want to go much faster than the 26, but I held it there as best I could. - There were no T'ai Chi related questions.

There was no formal T'ai Chi practice yesterday.

November 19, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 291

Charlie and I popped in to the HEC 110 for a sub-four minute set. It was about 3 minutes and 57 seconds or so. I found I couldn't focus as well as I would have liked. Executing the set that quickly reminded me very much of Taekwondo, and some of the more interesting experiences there in.

After the set, we pushed a fair amount of hands and left around 9.

November 18, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 290

One (Charlie) warped in for a 23 (ish) minute set. I was not able to attend due to familial duties.

November 17, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 289

Three throttled a 23 minute uncalled set this morning. We faced north and realigned into a line, each behind the next with me standing at the back. It was different and certainly afforded a better view of some of the positions.

After the set, there was a question on the last Turn and Kick with Heel. I then proceeded to comment on the importance of sinking the elbows, especially in Press and I also commented on the breathing for the transitional arm-break right before Step Forward, Deflect Downward, Parry and Punch. It seemed like it was being rushed on occasion.

November 16, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 288

Two tooled in for a 29 minute uncalled set. It was very nice. I experimented with some slightly different "breathing" (aka energy work) and found a delightful sensation in my hands which had been to this point, illusive and seemingly random. I will endeavor to remember to try it again tomorrow.

I had only two minor suggestions for my lone student, one in Strike Tigers and one in Wave Hands Like Clouds.

November 15, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 287

Two tromped in for a 4 minute 5 second set. After the set, we did some very pleasant standing meditation for about 8 minutes. Had the requirements of the external world not been present, I am confident both of us could have stood a lot longer.

November 14, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 286

Four fell in for a 20 minute called set. We turned and faced west instead of east (though still south as far as the form was concerned). After the set, I commented on one student having mild issues with Ward Off Left and one student who was stepping too high.

November 13, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 285

Three thumped in to the HEC 110 for an 18 minute uncalled set.

Before the set, I worked briefly with one student to cement his understanding of Four-Corner Push Hands. After the set, there were questions on Fair Lady Works at Shuttles, Turn and Chop, and Single Whip.

After most of the Q&A, I also commented on the importance of "drooping" or pointing the elbows downward. I also commented on my better understanding of Snake Creeps Down.

November 12, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 284

Three thought it wise to engage in a 21 minute uncalled set in the actual Allen Center. Normally we'd be in the HEC on Saturday, but that room was otherwise occupied.

Again, I chose to stand in the rear and found several talking points suitable for discussion after the set. These included a correction on at the end of Single Whip for stance width, a correction on the arms for Lift Hands and Step Forward (arm-pits must stay open, but arms not up too far) and then a potential correction on Fair Lady Works at Shuttles, but I need to check a higher source on that one. We also engaged in some lively discussion following the set. It was a good way to start the day.

November 11, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 283

Three for a 19 minute called set. We switched places again. After the set, I discussed Ward Off Left and the first Turn and Kick with Heel.

November 10, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 282

Three for 23. I stood behind again but did not call the set.

November 9, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 281

Four flurried in from the flurries for a 19 minute uncalled set. I had some coffee prior to the set and I must say, I didn't like the effect. I was too preoccupied with my own internal oddities to note issues with other folk's form and there were no questions.

November 8, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 280

Two toppled in for a 12 minute uncalled set. I, unfortunately, could not attend for various reasons but Charlie was kind enough to lead the set.

November 7, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 279

Three threw in for a 26 minute called set. I stood in back so I could see from a different angle. I found it interesting from several aspects. There were several corrections I offered to the other two folks there, but I also noticed I had no compulsion to follow some of the interesting choices (especially in the speed and flow departments) made by one of the students. I plan to experiment with this further.

The big issue I talked about was stance.

November 6, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 278

Three throttled in for a 17 minute called set.

After the set, there was one question on the transition between Lift Hands, Step Forward and White Crane Spreads Wings.

November 5, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 277

Two torqued in to HEC 110 for a ~4:32 form after a very pleasant warm-up. The need for speed seems to be the focus of late. I think it's time to slow it down again.

There were no questions after the set.

November 4, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 276

Two traipsed in for a 4:15 second, rocket-sled-on-rails, snap-daddy of martial techniques set today followed by several minutes of aggressively probing push-hands. It was a delicious way to start the day.

November 3, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 275

Two trudged in for a 23 minute set. Alas, that I could not join them. My alarm clock was acting oddly, or perhaps I just turned off my ears so that it didn't wake me. It's often difficult to tell.

November 2, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 274

Two toppled in for a 4:33 set. Just before the set, I demonstrated Tae Guk Il Jang. It seemed to add some real explosive energy to my set. :-)

After the set, Charlie and I did about 5 minutes of pushing hands. This was also very nice.

November 1, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 273

Three thumped in for an 8 minute uncalled set. Following the set, we participated in 5 minutes of standing meditation.

October 31, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 272

Three threaded their way in on All Hallows Eve morning to indulge in a 25 minute called set. We faced actual north today instead of east. I found it a nice change of pace. It certainly shows a different side of the form.

After the set, there was a question on Needle at Sea Bottom and another on Turn and Chop. I also commented on turning the waist and being sure to look ahead of where the hands are going. Single Whip showed the issue most prominently.

October 30, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 271

Five flapped in for a 20 minute called set. After the set I talked about the new (old) breathing for Snake Creeps Down. - I still need to watch Master Yang Jun for further understanding of this, but it's starting to gel.

There were also two "realizations" from two different practitioners. One was constantly bringing their foot too far back between many of the transitions causing them to often wobble on balance. The other realized that they were using too much Li in the arms.

It is really nice to hear that these people are coming to these understandings. It makes what I'm trying to do at least a bit more worth-while.

October 29, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 270

Five filed in for a 27 minute uncalled set. After the set there were questions regarding linear tracking and if it is necessary. (It isn't in the fashion of that question, anyway.) I then made comments about coming out of Snake Creeps Down and the necessity of opening the left leg by turning the waist before moving fully into the next position and comments about the upper hand placement in White Crane Spreads Wings and Turn and Chop. At this point almost everyone else left. There was one final question regarding Snake Creeps Down breathing which helped me understand the breating much better than I had. As I had stated to the group earlier, the group sessions were just as helpful to me as the are to anyone else. Practice is good, but practicing in a veritable vacuum is less helpful.

October 28, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 269

Four fell in for a 29 minute called set this morning.

After the set, one person had questions on the foot work getting into Strike Tiger Left and another question about something else, which I can't currently remember. Perhaps later.

October 27, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 268

Four filed in for an 18 minute called set. The flow was pretty good, at least for me.

Before the set, a student from 201 asked several questions about various frames including Turn and Chop, High Pat on Horse, Separate Feet, Strike Tigers, and Turn and Kick with Heel.

October 26, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 267

Six slipped in for a nice warm up and then five flowed into a 25 minute called set. We had a couple of folks from  the 201+ University class stop in, probably because tomorrow is the mid-term exam. Perhaps they will come more frequently, but I'm not going to hold my breath. ;-)

After the set, there was a question on the transition from Turn and Chop into Step Forward, etc.

October 25, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 266

Four flamingoed in for a 16 minute uncalled set. I slowed it down this morning as we had a 201 student joining us. It was quite nice in flow and (by-and-large) timing.

Following the set, we all partook in about 6 minutes of standing meditation. All in all, an excellent way to start the day.

October 24, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 265

Three again thwarted sleep and participated in a 23 minute called set. I intentionally brought it up close to the timing that Master Yang does in his exhibition form. I talked a little more about Turn and Sweep Lotus and the apparent breathing Master Yang is using. - There were no questions this morning.

October 23, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 264

Three thought their way through a 26 minute uncalled set today. After the set, there was discussion of Turn and Sweep Lotus especially related to the breath count. There were also questions on Strike Tigers and Part the Wild Horses Mane transitions.

October 22, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 263

One arrived at the HEC about 8 minutes after the hour and stayed a bit to practice the staff. He was reminded of a valuable lesson regarding expectations.

October 21, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 262

Two tapped in for a 17 minute uncalled but well flowing set followed by several minutes of push-hands. It was a nice way to start a Friday morning.

October 20, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 261

Four started today and three finished a 26 minute uncalled set, though the fourth went much further in the form than yesterday.

Today there was a question on waist turns in Separate Feet. There is actually a considerable amount of waist movement in those two positions. I went on to talk about Push, specifically that one should have the hands turned to about 30 degrees thus bringing the little-finger edge of the hand to bear first. I also talked about Single Whip, both the full frame specifically about the mild seating and rotation of the wrists outward and then the short Single Whip coming out of Wave Hands Like Clouds, specifically the breath-count from one to the other.

October 19, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 260

Four started and three finished a 31 minute uncalled set this morning. Although no questions were raised, I did talk a bit about turn and chop and Strike Tigers with special attention to the raised arm. I also talked about "drooping" the elbows while sinking the shoulders and demonstrated why this is so important from a martial point of view.

October 18, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 259

Five started and four finished an 8 minute set this morning. Following the set, the four remaining found time for about 6 minutes of standing meditation. It was quite nice.

October 17, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 258

Three thought their way in for a 27 minute called set. There were no questions and I was too focused on my own set to offer corrections for others today.

October 16, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 257

(No practice yesterday due to lack of room availability.) Two traipsed in for an 18 minute called set. There were no questions after the set.

October 14, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 256

Five started and four finished a 28 minute called name/called breath set. One of my students wanted to record this. I'm hoping for a copy both pre and post-production. Although his desire was for the audio, he used a small video camera so it should be interesting to see.

There were no questions after the set.

October 13, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 255

Four flippered in out of the rain for a 27 minute uncalled set. During the set I "discovered" some very interesting rooting occurring at the end of positions in bow-stance. It was interesting because it was coming more from the waist turn and less from the weight shift. Part the Wild Horses Mane lent itself quite well to this discovery.

After the set, there were no questions so I demonstrated why it is important to "droop" the elbows. The lesson was well taught.

October 12, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 254

Two rocketed in for a 4 minute, 10 second set this morning. - I can honestly say that I felt several of the positions to be less than adequate, but much of the set felt very good.

After the set, Charlie and I completed 5 minutes of standing meditation. - It was very relaxing.

October 11, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 253

Charlie led two through a 10 minute set this morning. Alas, I could not make it.

October 10, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 252

Five started and four ended an 18 minute called set. The request was for a 22 minute set, but I sped up part 2.

I don't recall any questions at the moment.

October 9, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 251

Three thought T'ai Chi a good idea this morning and executed a pleasant 24 minute uncalled set. After the set, there was a question on Turn and Sweep Lotus regarding foot positioning. (Empty-Solid stance, good. Cat stance, less so.) I then reviewed the transition between White Snake Puts Out Tongue and Step Forward, etc. Finally, I reminded people to "droop" their elbows and demonstrated the reason. - All-in-all, it was a good session.

October 8, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 250

Three threw in for a 25 minute uncalled set in HEC 110. Before the set, there was a question on Separate Feet for which the answer, according to the student in question, assisted him greatly in both understanding of the position and in balance while executing.

After the set, Charlie and I ran through the staff form a couple times but then vacated the room as there was a young lady waiting to use the facilities.

October 7, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 249

Charlie led 5 through a 27(ish) minute called set. Alas, for I could not attend.

October 6, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 248

Four flung themselves into a 29 minute, uncalled set this morning. We changed our pointing to the actual south wall. It felt really good to me. I just had to make sure not to go too slowly.

After the set, no questions were raised so I reiterated the transition of the lead foot for Lift Hands Step Forward both getting into the position and ending the position. I contrasted it to the foot work for Needle at Sea-bottom, and explained why you would want a longer base in the latter. I then went on to talk about the initial waist-turn in Apparent Closeup. I noted all of these positions requiring "work" for at least some of the students there today.

October 5, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 247

Three traced the form with their shoes for a 31 minute set. And speaking of shoes, mine started out tight but seem to have loosened. New shoes always makes life a little more interesting, at least for a while.

Although there were no questions after the set, I did take opportunity to remind those there that the hips should be folded through out Needle at Sea-bottom and Fan Through Back. At least one and I think two were doing this position incorrectly. I also reiterated the breath-count for Wave Hands Like Clouds into Single Whip. It seemed to be getting a little short in places.

October 4, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 246

Three thought it good to come in this morning for a 5 minute and 15 second set. My shoes were too slippery for really good grip, but I kept my footing and balance throughout. After the set, we did just over 5 minutes of standing meditation. My theoretical goal is to make this (for me) the 40 breath meditation and see how long I can make it.

October 3, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 245

Five (not including me) fostered a 30 minute (approximate) called set by Charlie. I wish I could have been their to field questions, etc.

October 2, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 244

Four fletched in for a 28 minute uncalled set. The set felt really good today, smooth, balanced, focused. I think I like practicing everyday. ;-)

After the set, there were two questions. Of them, I only recall the second one, which was more a comment on the fact that today, the student had balance only on one leg and not on the other. - This seems to be a common phenomenon in both my personal and observational experience.

Post Q&A, Charlie and I pushed some hands.

October 1, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2010 Day 243

Two trotted in for a 20 minute uncalled set this morning. Following the set, we pushed a little hands and left by 9.

There was one question on the application of the transition between Ward Off Left and Ward Off Right.

September 30, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 242

Four festinated in for a 28 minute called set. After the set, a question regarding the end hand-placement in the "easy" Turn and Kick with Heel (in part 2) lead to further discoveries of hand placement in the beginning of the frame as well. - It was a good question. :-)

It's time.

September 29, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 241

Four fiddled while Rome burned. Okay, maybe not. But four fine folk did fall in for a 29 minute uncalled set. Prior to the set, there was a question on Roll-Back and after the set there was a question on Crossed Hands.

September 28, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 240

Four flung themselves in for a 28 minute uncalled set. There were no questions, but I did correct one student's Roll Back.

September 27, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 239

Four flew in for a pleasant warm-up and a 9 minute uncalled set. Following, three of us stayed for about 6 minutes of standing meditation.

September 26, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 238

Five flopped in for a 34 minute called set. By-and-large, people did well. Some need to remember how to follow a called set. - There were no questions.

September 25, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 237

Two tore in for a 33 minute uncalled set. Following the set, Charlie and I worked on some interesting push-hands, mostly noodling. It was rewarding. To finish up the time, we practiced staff a couple times. It was nice to get back into it.

September 23, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 236

Four flew in for a 19 minute called set. Charlie requested a slightly less slow set today as he needed to be elsewhere. - We also had one "new" person attend who is currently in 201. :-)

There were no questions after the set.

September 22, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 235

Two tramped in for an 18 minute uncalled set. I felt like I rushed part 3 a bit, but it still felt like a good set.

September 21, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 234

Three threw in for a 29 minute called set. A former student stopped by and since he's been out of it for a while, I felt a called set was in order. There were no questions after the set.

September 20, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 233

Three threw in for a very helpful if somewhat annoying* warm-up followed by a seven minute set. After the set, we paused for about six minutes of standing meditation.

*The warm-up was likely only annoying to me because of my somewhat more strenuous activities over the last two days.

September 19, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 232

Four fell in for a standard warm-up and a 28 minute called set. - No questions.

September 16, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 231

Four flopped in for a 28 minute called set. One left early. ;-)

There were no questions.

September 15, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 230

Five flopped in from the frost on the grass this morning for a 27 minute uncalled set. Everyone seemed like they were in a hurry today. Everyone was ahead of me at one time or another. *shrug* Oh well. It worked out nicely, anyway.

After the set, there was a question on the left leg movement in the first Ward Off Left.

September 14, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 229

Four flew in from the (almost) frost-like temperatures for a 26 minute uncalled set. I focused on rooting largely and although I was able to feel a good root through much of the set, I felt disjointed.

There was one question on the transition from Lift Hands Step Forward into White Crane Spreads Wings. It appears that I need to review this with the upper-level folks in my class.

September 13, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 228

Five fled the smoke and ash from a Minnesota wildfire and came to an 11 minute uncalled set. After the set, we finished up with about 5 minutes of standing meditation. - It was a really nice way to start the day.

September 12, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 227

The mist was thick across the lowland waters as I drove in this morning. The seasons change, the sky darkens, soon it will be Winter.

Five flopped in for a 27 minute called set. Our new student rejoined us. I was surprised, but pleased, and it is obvious she is improving. There were no questions after the set.

September 9, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 226

Five fell in for a 27 minute called set. There were no T'ai Chi related questions after the set.

September 8, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 225

Six slapped themselves awake enough to come to morning practice including one "new" person. I was pleased. For her benefit, I did a called set today lasting about 25 minutes. She was somewhat overwhelmed, but did well by-and-large, especially for a first-time.

There were no questions after the set.

September 7, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 224

Five flew in for a 29 minute uncalled set this brisk September morning. My legs were actually just a touch sore from, in part, three sets yesterday and my guess would be in part from lack of good rest. The flow was still quite good. There were no questions.

September 6, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 223

Five flocked in for an eleven minute uncalled set followed by about 5 and a half minutes of standing meditation. It was really quite nice. I did promise that next Tuesday, we would get back to our "rocket-sled-on-rails" pace. ;-)

September 4, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 222

Only two stopped in for a 15 minute set. I had to leave early or it would have been longer. - No group practice tomorrow.

September 3, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 221

Charlie led two others in a 33 minute set. I wish I'd been there.

September 2, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 220

For flocked in for a 29 minute called set today. It was good to be back.

September 1, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 219

Two came in for a 30-ish minute set. I couldn't make it due to personal issues.

August 31, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 218

Two tromped in for a 28 minute uncalled set today. It was a really nice set. :-)

August 30, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 217

Charlie executed a solo set today lasting about 5 minutes. Alas, for I needed to be elsewhere again.

August 29, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 216

Two toppled in (eventually) this morning for an accelerated warm-up followed by a 5 minute 15 second uncalled set. Charlie and I had fun with it this morning and it really felt quite good. The flow was quite enjoyable.

August 28, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 215

Two tramped in for a 32 minute uncalled set. After the set, we engaged in a small amount of Yang-style-specific push-hands and ended with a couple run-throughs of the staff form. All-in-all, a very nice way to start the day.

August 27, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 214

Charlie and I arrived a bit late today in HEC 110 as the lot was full and the street was parked full all the way down past the cut-through to Debot. Upon arrival, I noticed the floor was quite dirty so I ran a dust-mop over most of it before our warm-up and 16 minute set.

After the set, Charlie and I worked on about 25 minutes of push-hands. It was very enjoyable. We ended with a  couple of quick staff sets before walking back to our respective vehicles.

August 26, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 213

Four flopped in for a 27 minute called set. It was good to be back, even if I was still a bit sleep deprived.

August 25, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 212

Charlie ran a solo set for 23 minutes.

I tried to get up in time, but I didn't get home until about 1 AM and couldn't sleep immediately after getting home.

August 24, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 211

Charlie led one other for a 26 minute set.

I found time to practice a partial set in Detroit airport and had fun walking the wrong way on a walker-assist conveyor belt. Having a conversation with someone while they're standing still and I'm walking on said belt was very amusing.

August 23, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 210

Charlie ran a solo set for 6 minutes.

I used T'ai Chi principles to help the cable tech pull cable.

August 22, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 209

Although I could not attend, Charlie led three through a 22 minute set.

Very late on Monday/very early on Tuesday, I found a vacant lot in Dover and after a lengthy warm-up including a number of non-T'ai Chi and very accelerated T'ai Chi movements. I had actually started a set in a laundromat while waiting for the dryer to finish, but I only finished part 1 there for various reasons. After the warm-up, I started with part 2, went through part 3 and then went back and did part 1 again. It was a solid hour (at least) of warm-up and practice not counting the Laundromat and I felt quite good after. This seemed a better place to practice on NH than on the side of a ridge, energetically speaking.

August 19, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 208

Four came in for a 28 minute called set. It was quite enjoyable.

There were no questions.

There will be no formal practice tomorrow or Sunday.

August 18, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 207

Four found their way to to the Allen Center today for an 18 minute uncalled set. The one which did not finish the set yesterday finished today. I hope the remaining road to her recovery is smooth and even.

Although there were no questions after the set, I did take a moment to reiterate the breathing for Kick With Left Heel (4 count) and Snake Creeps Down, asking the students to keep an eye on breath control as they go down. It is very easy to expel all your breath too quickly which will change the speed of the position considerably.

August 17, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 206

Three threw in for a 19 minute uncalled set. The return of one member after a month or so absence was quite nice to see, though she was only able to go up through about Punch Down. At least it is a solid start. We'll see if it continues.

There were no questions.

August 16, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 205

Two toppled in for a pleasant warm-up and a full set executed in just over 5 minutes. - I found Fair Lady Works at Shuttles (especially the second and fourth) to be particularly rewarding today. A circular flow of arms, turning waist, and powerful yet grounded completion. Yummy.

After the set, we did about 6 minutes of standing meditation. It was a little different for me today; not bad in the slightest, just different. I need to contemplate this before I could even hope to express it.

August 15, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 204

Four flopped in for a 27 minute called set this morning. All in all, it was quite nice. I did lose focus once on the second Golden Cock, but recovered quickly enough.

There were no questions after the set.

August 14, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 203

Three made it to HEC 110 today. I was able to return and lead the group in a nice warm up followed by a 27 minute uncalled set. Charlie and I worked briefly on the staff after the set.

August 13, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 202

Two came into the HEC 110. Charlie acquired a key from the strength center and the small group was able to practice a 22 minute set. Again, I was not there, but this was due primarily to the radio station I normally wake up to being off the air. *shrug* Oh well. I'm sure I needed the sleep.

August 12, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 201

Two tromped in for a 26 minute set. I was not able to attend due to familial obligations.

August 11, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 200

Three threw in for a 30 minute uncalled set. The flow and breathing seemed to go quite well today. I skipped "forcing" the breathing like yesterday and just went with the flow. I really liked the results.

There were no questions.

August 10, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 199

Two toppled in for a 30 minute uncalled set. - I tried using the metronome method (no actual metronome) to count and hold a given speed. (This is something approximating a 3 second count per breath count.) I was not entirely successful. I think I'll have to bring in the metronome and chat with my instructor more about breathing.

There were no questions after the set.

August 9, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 198

Two tromped in for a 4 minute 40 second uncalled set. After the set, Charlie and I enjoyed 5 minutes of standing meditation. All facets of the morning were enjoyable.

August 8, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 197

Three came in for a 30 minute set. - I was unable to attend due to other duties, but Charlie was kind enough to lead the group.

August 7, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 196

Three stopped in for a 21 minute uncalled set. The flow seemed pretty good, though the pace was vaguely inconsistent.

There were no technical questions after the set, just a few pleasant observations about T'ai Chi in general and Fist Under Elbow specifically. - We left HEC 110 around 9 AM choosing not to extend our time there.

August 6, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 195

Seven swept in to HEC 110 for a slightly late-starting warm-up and 28 minute call set. We started late because the parking lot was being resurfaced and after we had all parked there, the folk resurfacing the lot asked us to move our vehicles.

Before the set, there was a question about stance and the comfort of the bow stance. The student in question likes to point his lead toe in slightly but his knee matches so it should be mostly acceptable. After the set, there were questions on Needle at Sea Bottom into Fan Through Back and Lift Hands-Step Forward.

After the set, we worked briefly on staff.

August 5, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 194

Four flopped in for a 27 minute called set.

After the set, there were questions about Close and general height of foot placement during frame transition. Overall, it was a good morning practice. :-)

August 4, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 193

Two toppled in for a 20 minute to-do (or set, as we like to call it ;-). I commented about the need to keep the shoulders not behind the vertical line of the torso but there were no questions.

August 3, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 192

The same three from yesterday came in again today for a 37 minute uncalled set. It was only 37 minutes because I accelerated the set twice in part 3 (at Wave Hands Like Clouds both times). Had I not done so, it would have likely been at least 42 minutes long.

There were no questions after the set.

August 2, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 191

Three stopped in for a pleasant warm up and 8 minute uncalled set. The flow was nice, though I chafed a bit to move a bit less slowly.

After the set, we completed about 6 minutes of standing meditation. The energy flow was better today than often in past as was my ability to concentrate.

August 1, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 190

Four fell in for a warm-up and a 27 minute called set. There were no questions after the set.

July 31, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 189

Three thwapped the new floor in HEC 110 and after a slightly delayed start, completed a warm-up and 28 minute uncalled set.

There were questions after the set regarding the changes since August 2010. I was only able to cover a few near the beginning of the form (in part 1) as there was lengthy dialog about various aspects of various positions.

July 30, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 188

Three regrouped in HEC 110 with a wonderfully redone floor. There was the faintest of chemical smells in the room when we first entered, but with the door open and the air-handling going much more forcefully than usual, the room became quite pleasant. We executed a 30 minute, uncalled set after-which there were no questions. Charlie and I stayed on a bit and ran through the staff set three times, each time knocking a bit more of the rust off the set.

There were no relevant questions though right about the time we hit Fair Ladies, I had the thought that I should comment on arm position in relation to the torso. It feels like I can make the statement that the shoulder should never be pulled back behind the "vertical" line of the torso. I think any time it appears that an arm or elbow is behind the vertical line of the torso, it is an illusion created by the turning of the waist.

July 29, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 187

Charlie practiced a lone set for about 23 minutes. I wasn't able to make it.

July 28, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 186

Two tromped in for a rousing 8 minute set followed immediately by 15+ minutes of push-hands. It was most amusing and very worth-while. If Charlie and I are the only two in future, we shall have to continue this game.

July 27, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 185

Three slipped in from the moderate to heavy rain for a 27 minute uncalled set. We altered our normal facing of the mirrors (east) to the wall with the closet (north) such that the mirrors provided alternate data. I found it illuminating both from a personal perspective as well as from an instructor's perspective.

Although there were no questions after the set, I reiterated the transition between Bend Bow Shoot Tiger and Step Forward, Deflect Downward, etc. The primary issue I noted was an incorrect pointing of the right foot which translates to a non-turning of the waist for the transitional "arm"-break between the two aforementioned positions.

July 26, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 184

Only two tromped in this morning, but after a pleasant warm-up, Charlie and I rocketed through the entire set in 4.5 minutes. There were a few places (for myself) that felt a bit 'wild' or sloppy perhaps, but by and large, it went well. This is (to date) the fastest time I've done the set with someone else. I don't know that I'll get it much faster than this without changing my profession to 'whirling dervish' but it will be amusing to try.

After the set, Charlie and I executed six minutes of standing meditation using our usual 'Embrace the Tree' pose and then did another couple of minutes using a different pose. It was quite enjoyable.

July 25, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 183

Four (eventually) made their way in for a 17 minute called set. I reduced the slowness of the pace due to a report from one of the other folks there that campus was off the Internet and since I have the pleasure of being on-call today, I wanted to get in and investigate the claim. Although true, there is nothing I can do about it.

The pace of the set did seem faster than 17 minutes, but as Charlie pointed out, it may have been because I was calling the set. Breathing and talking make whole-body movement so interesting sometimes.

There were no significant questions before or after the set.

July 24, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 182

Four found their way to the field behind the HEC for a 28 minute uncalled set.

There were no questions.

July 23, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 181

Two tromped in (and out and in again) for a 25 minute uncalled set. We ended up in a gym instead of outside as the clouds were threatening more than covering the sun. The room we used was nice enough but was very warm such that after the set, we took a bit of water and went our separate ways.

There were no questions.

July 22, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 180

Three throbbed in for an 18 minute called set. - Although the set was okay, it didn't go quite the way I wanted. I discovered that calling the set and attempting to root at the same time is difficult at best. I may try it again sometime, but for now, I wouldn't recommend it.

There were no questions after the set.

July 21, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 179

Two tromped in for a 24 minute called set. After the set, there were questions on Transitional Single Whip and Turn and Sweep Lotus. After the questions, I also suggested a continued focus on leading with the waist and compressing the hips a bit more.

July 20, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day x

Canceled today on account of storm damage, power outage, flooding, and downed trees. Perhaps tomorrow.

July 19, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 178

Two tracked in for a 7 minute set. Alas, that I was not among them.

(I awoke at the appointed time, looked at the clock and thought to myself, "That's silly. It's the weekend." I then reset the clock accordingly and went back to sleep. :-p )

July 18, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 177

Four flopped in from the already-hot and muggy morning into the Allen Center for a warm-up (*heh*) and a 24 minute called set.

After the set, there was a question on the transition between the second and third Fair Lady Works at Shuttles, another question on the transition between Ward Off Left and Ward Off Right and a third question which eludes me at the moment.

July 17, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 176

One ploughed his way through the oppressive, water-laden air to the field behind the DUC. Therein, a 'warm'-up was performed followed by a 4 minute set. This felt good. It flowed where it was supposed to flow and it snapped crisply where (I believe) it would snap in usage. I found it very rewarding.

The only question (while I was executing the set) was, is there any truth to the theory that Taekwondo could have started as a soft, internal art form? The sleeping kitty says, 'Ask again, later.'

Before the set, I popped up to the room and found that it still stinks of the floor resurfacing chemicals. It still looks nice, too, but of course if the people who normally use the room are dead from the fumes, they are unlikely to scuff the floor overmuch.

July 16, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 175

Four flapped through the muggy air, redolent of soon-coming rain. We gathered on the lawn outside of the HEC near Pray-Simms and after a warm-up, executed a 16 minute set. It would have been longer, but partway through part 3, the pregnant skies gave birth to the much-expected rain. T'was appreciated by this practitioner that it started slowly and thus gave us time to complete the set, albeit at a much accelerated pace.

After the set, we all hastily headed to our horseless hansoms, heeding the watery clouds proffered warning. There were no questions. ;-)

July 15, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 174

Three threw in this morning for a 17 minute called set. I was about 10 minutes late due mostly to a train very slowly crossing Business 51. Fortunately, the set was still quite enjoyable though I felt a bit rushed in breath while trying to call the set at that rate.

There were no questions after the set.

July 14, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 173

Four fled the delightfully cool outdoors this morning and met inside. Prior to the warm-up, most folks walked around the room and removed long, dark shoe marks from the floor. I'm not sure who is leaving all the marks on the floor, but I would enjoy having a conversation with them about their inappropriate behavior.

The set ran for 29 minutes today and to increase the usefulness factor, I asked that everyone face true south (again, instead of the true east we normally face) such that they could see themselves in the mirrors from yet a different aspect. At least two of the people there commented that they found it quite useful. Comments I have made before are now seeming to gel and be retained as well. This is positive in my opinion.

There were no questions after the set.

July 13, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 172

Three threaded in for a 27 minute uncalled set facing north instead of our usual east. This gave us significantly different perspective with the mirrors. It was nice to see, actually, though I didn't find any startling revelations from that.

After the set, Charlie and I got to talking about feet and the 9 points on said feet which should be in contact with the floor. He was talking largely about the outside edge and it occurred to me that the chaining necessary in the arms and hands for a good push is probably similar to the chaining required for a good, rooted stance. I shall have to examine this further.

July 12, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 171

Four flocked (some like seagulls, some like Ravens, one like a vulture) in for morning practice today. After a  delightful warm up, we executed a 6 minute set. (Funeral to be announced later.) After the set, we enjoyed about six minutes of standing meditation. After the latter, Charlie echoed my thoughts by indicating that 6 minutes of standing meditation was becoming almost easy. It may be time to ramp it up a bit.

July 11, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 170

Three thronged in for a 29 minute called set this morning. The flow (to me) seemed quite nice and relaxing. There were no questions after the set.

July 10, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 169

Charlie and I showed up to play on the same stretch of lawn from yesterday. After a nice warm-up, we blew through a 6 minute set followed by 20+ minutes of push-hands. It was quite enjoyable.

July 9, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 168

Four flopped in to the field by the HEC for a warm-up after which we moved to the lawn in front of Pray-Sims Hall. There, we executed a 24 minute uncalled set. We wrapped it up after the set as I needed to be elsewhere.

July 8, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 167

Four flowed in for a 29 minute called set today. By and large, the form went well. One or two of the students still need to remember the breathing in one or two of the positions. This will likely help them slow down and prevent them from the need to wait until the next position is called, or from getting a position or two ahead of the rest of the group.

After the set, there was a question on the arm motions from Ride Tiger into and through Sweep Lotus. Everything is circular, in this case, overlapping spirals. ;-)

July 7, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 166

Six slid in for an 18 minute uncalled set this morning. Charlie was back after a week-long sojourn for his betterment in certain art forms. - I asked the students to focus on rooting today. I found it rewarding as well. I feel very rooted now, so soon after the set.

After the set, one of my students noticed a variation in my execution of the last Turn and Kick With Heel in part two. The initial portion of the movement is the same, but during the spin, I am hooking my left foot in closer to my right. I am still able to set the left foot down in the correct spot, but the spin is more centered and a bit less slow. I anticipate this will be especially helpful in the Tuesday sets.

There were no further T'ai Chi related questions this morning.

July 6, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 165

Four filed in for a 25 minute uncalled set. I seem to be taking notably longer stride when traveling to the "west" than the "east". Part of it may be setting the foot down from the kicks though there are kicks to the east, too. *shrug* I'll have to try to pay closer attention.

There were no questions after the set.

July 5, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 164

Two tromped in for a 7.5 minute set this morning. Other than wanting to do another Wave Hands Like Clouds from the last Single Whip, it went well.

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 163

Three again gathered in the field by the HEC for a 17 minute uncalled (but insect-present) form. The building was locked so we were unable to retrieve our staves for practice. - There were no questions after the set.

July 2, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 162

Four took to the field for a pleasant 'warm' up and a 26 minute set. The sun was strong but the breeze helped keep us from overheating. After the set, all three of the others stayed for some very basic staff instruction.

The room we normally practice in on the weekends looks very nice. Unfortunately, the resurfaced floor is still emanating considerable toxins and even for the short times I was therein retrieving or returning staves, I started feeling light-headed and a  touch ill. We won't be practicing there this weekend for sure and probably not next weekend, either.

July 1, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 161

Four flapped in for a 25 minute called (and called breath) set this morning. I spoke briefly before the set about how important coordinating the breath with the movement is, and today did my best to demonstrate that while leading the set. I did get comments from two of the three other people there about how helpful it was, so well worth the effort on my part.

There were no questions after the set.

June 30, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 160

Three threw in for a nice warm-up and a 19 minute uncalled set. I focused on leading with the waist and found some very interesting bits between Step Forward, Deflect Downward, Perry and Punch and Ward Off Right.

After the set, there were again questions on the transition from Sweep Lotus into Bend Bow, Shoot Tiger. Progress is being made.

June 29, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 159

Four found their way in for a 25 minute uncalled set. I asked the students to focus on their breathing today and promised the form would not be overly long.

Before the set, Charlie asked about Brush Left Knee, specifically the height of the brushing arm. I'm inclined to say lower dan tien height, but will confirm. After the set, there was a question on the foot work of Bend Bow, Shoot Tiger and another question on maintaining balance while executing kicks. I related Charlie's discovery of drawing the kicking leg up directly in front of the supporting leg and asked the student to play with it.

June 28, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 158

Three again today for about 11 minutes. I was again not able to attend so Charlie led.

June 27, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 157

Three today for about 22 minutes. I was not able to attend so Charlie led.

June 24, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 156

Six slid in for a 27 minute called set today. I urged people to try to keep the posture and lead with the waist throughout the set.

After the set, one student inquired about my knuckle-conditioning exercises and asked if they were necessary for T'ai Chi. I indicated that they were not and were more a carryover from a different, hard-style martial art I used to study. I then proceeded to demonstrate some of the differences in styles.

June 23, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 155

Six slipped in for a 32 minute uncalled set. I really focused on the meditative aspects of the set today which probably explains why it was longer than usual. Although I won't say I was disappointed with the outcome, I think I constrained my own "flow".

After the set, I spoke with one student about some physical limitations they are experiencing.

June 22, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 154

Six showed up this morning, though I was about 15 minutes late, due primarily to getting caught behind a train. Fortunately, Charlie was there to start warm-ups. After the last half of the warm-up, we executed a 29 minute uncalled set. After the set, one student wanted to see very specific positions for Grasp Birds Tail.

June 21, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 153

Four flew in for an 8 minute uncalled set. The flow seemed pretty good, though I had intended the form to be a couple minutes longer and I did lose my place sometime around the second Fair Lady Works at Shuttles for a second or so..

There were no questions after the set.

June 20, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 152

Four flounced in for a 28 minute called set. It seemed that most there had a lot of issues moving slowly enough to avoid waiting at the end of each position. There were no questions at the end of the set.

Since it was raining yesterday morning, we did not meet as we had no room within to meet. We will not meet next weekend, either.

June 18, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 151

At least 5 showed up today, but since the floors in the HEC 110 (and our alternate, 154) were being resurfaced, at least one chose to leave prior to our actual start of practice. We chose to practice outside today on the football field. It was actually quite nice. The set ran for the somewhat typical 27 minutes and other than a few issues regarding turning, felt really quite nice. There were no form-related questions after the set. - Tomorrow's practice will be weather-dependent.

June 17, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 150

All but three chose to be elsewhere this morning. We got a bit of a late start as the building was locked when we arrived. Charlie was kind enough to call the number posted on the outside of the Allen Center but after waiting for a while, I started warm-ups out on the grass. About half-way through, they opened the building so after the warm-ups, we went in for a slightly less slow called 18 minute set. There were no questions before or after the set.

June 16, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 149

Four flocked to practice in the Allen Center today for a 27 minute set. Alas, that I was not one of them. I had 'timing' issues which lead to an abundance of sleep. Charlie was kind enough to fill in.

June 15, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 148

Two (Charlie and I) trod upon the newly surfaced floor. It's very shinny, but now my shoes squeak. - We faced more toward the real south today and executed a 25 minute uncalled set. The flow was nice and other than one minor balance issue, I felt good about the form.

June 14, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 147

One (Charlie) showed up for a 7 minute set. Alas, the sandman was too aggressive for me to join him.

June 13, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 146

Four frothed in for a 30 minute called set this morning. Some folks still have a lot if difficulty with the idea of waiting until I'm done naming a position to actually start the position. Most folks have difficulty maintaining breath control during Snakes Creeps Down. - We did our set with the fans off today, not, I think, due to any conscious decision, but the one person who really likes the fans on wasn't there today. Although warmer, it wasn't bad at all and it made it much easier to call the set without yelling. There were no questions after the set.

June 12, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 145

Four started and three completed a 24 minute uncalled set this morning. After the set, Charlie and I stayed to work on push-hands. It was mostly single-hand to noodling, but well enjoyed by both participants.

June 11, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 144

Eight entered room HEC 110 for a 19 minute called set this morning. After the set, there were questions on the foot work of Grasp Bird's Tail, a potential "opening" while executing Step Forward Deflect Downward Perry and Punch, and some comments on Part The Wild Horse's Mane. After the set and the Q&A, we worked on staff. I had hoped to work on the beginning of part 3 with one student, but the two beginners needed to be taught Crossed Stance, Wheel Chop.

There was one "new" person there, but I am hesitant to believe she'll be back.

June 10, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 143

Four for 35 or perhaps 30 or 32. Charlie led the set. I needed to be elsewhere.

June 9, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 142

Five found their way in for a 33 minute uncalled set today. The practice felt very nice to me, though at the end of part two, I decided to decrease the slowness a bit, as we were already 18 minutes in. Had we continued at that pace, it would have been a solid 36 if not longer.

There were no set related questions, though one student wants more information on parts 2 and 3.

June 8, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 141

Three threw caution to the wind and saved electricity by practicing today in the quickly warming sunshine. The temperature rose from 75 to almost 80 in the hour we were there. After the "warm-up", we all did a 28 minute uncalled set. The heat and humidity made it seem longer.

There were no set-related questions.

June 7, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 140

Two tromped through the early morning humidity for an eight minute set. There were no set-related questions.

June 6, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 139

Five frothed in for a 26 minute called set. After the set, there were questions on Golden Cock Stands on One Leg, Step Back and Repulse Monkey, the last Step Forward, Deflect Downward, Parry, and Punch, Press, and Roll Back.

June 5, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 138

One attended practice today, but since that one was quite tired from other activities, he chose to abstain from the form today and after waiting about 25 minutes to make sure no one else was actually going to show up, went home and had breakfast.

June 4, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 137

Four fell into the oven of HEC 110 and roasted for a relatively pleasant 28 minute set. It felt way too fast for me, but I was tired and I usually enjoy the slower sets when I'm tired and sore.

After the set, there were questions, comments, and explanations about "leading with the waist". There were even a few demonstrations and possibly some learning. Following the Q&A, we went through a bit of staff. I extended the beginners knowledge through the second block and sweep and firmed up the intermediate's knowledge of the end of part 2. Perhaps more next time.

June 3, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 136

Five followed my direction for a 22 minute called set. The room still had a bit of an unpleasant smell to it but others seemed to very much wish to practice inside today. We set up two fans to circulate the air which definitely helped, but the smell and the effects were still noticeable. Tomorrow will hopefully be better.

June 2, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 135

Four flounced in for a cool and breezy warm-up followed by a flowing 21 minute uncalled set out on the south side field of the Allen Center. The room is much better, but still just a bit smelly. It was chilly and breezy outside, but I felt good after the set whereas I think I still would have had some form of headache had we practiced in the room.

There were no questions.

June 1, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 134

Four blew in to the field in front of the Allen Center this morning for a 33 minute uncalled set. Some found the gusts of wind chilling but I thought they refreshing. Unlike yesterday during the day, I didn't have a lot of dirt blown into my eyes or lungs. We faced west this morning, working just to the east of the diagonal sidewalk leading to the Allen Center. We had a few spectators throughout the set, but no one was rude. Initially a robin and a rabbit watched for a while and later a member of the custodial crew was joined by several grounds crew members to surreptitiousness watch.

After the set, I briefly explained that during Turn and Sweep Lotus, ideally, the kicking leg is still up after the kick and is then quite intentionally and carefully set down for the Bend Bow, Shoot Tiger frame. This is obviously something to word toward as it can be quite tricky to both kick and maintain that level of balance.

May 31, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 133

Three thronged in the field just south of the Allen center for a 9 minute uncalled set. The weather was warm if overcast and the room we usually practice in stunk of the chemicals used to resurface the floor. I took opportunity before the set to check the room and (quite literally) one sniff later, I had the beginnings of a migraine. Thankfully, the effects passed with the warm-up and the set. The only issue practicing on the grass came during the turns. The respective grip of our shoes combined with the grass and the earth made such things unlikely to succeed. It was nice to be outside on a warm day for a change, though.

May 28, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 132

Four surprisingly showed up to a locked building. Yes, it was surprising there were four and it was a bit surprising that the building was locked as I had called earlier in the week to make sure the building would be open. *shrug* Oh well. We started late but managed a nice 25 minute set and still had time for some staff instruction with one of my evening class students. All in all, it was actually pretty nice.

May 26, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 131

Five froze their fingers during our outdoor "warm-up" after which we all went inside and executed a 19 minute mostly uncalled set. A couple of folks were having trouble with the single-line effect so I called positions when it was apparent confusion was present.

Nothing regarding questions an no practice on Friday, Sunday, or Monday.

May 25, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 130

Three threw down for a rather chilly warm-up. We started outside today and "warmed up" in 44 degree weather with a seven mph breeze. It was notably cool. After the warm up, we went in for some water and appropriated the lower hallway for an 18 minute uncalled set. There was some confusion nearing the end of part 2 which led to the omission of Strike Tigers and the easy Turn and Kick with Heel. All other positions were at least approximated.

:-p

May 24, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 129

Four fell in to an oddly decorated Studio B this morning. Most of the stuff that sits around the edges of the room had been removed in preparation for the floor resurfacing. After a very helpful warm-up, we executed a 6 minute set followed by about another 6 minutes of standing meditation. It was quite enjoyable.

Tomorrow is outside or not at all.

May 23, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 128

Six slowed down for a 27 minute called set this morning. I informed them about the need for outdoor shoes on Wednesday and Thursday and that practice was weather dependent. The floor in our area is being resurfaced so we need to be out for a while. Friday is a furlough day (mandatory) and Monday is a holiday. We'll probably have practice over the weekend, but I'm not sure yet.

There were no questions before or after the set.

May 22, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 127

Two threaded their way through the darkened back halls of the HEC to practice a 24 minute uncalled set. It was just Charlie and me but there were benefits for both of us, none-the-less.

May 21, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 126

Four flowed in for a 29 minute set today. There were a few distractions during the set, first of a couple musicians using our room as a hallway to another room and then from numerous musicians "warming up" to play for commencement. Unfortunately, they took 20 minutes to do it. Quite rude.

After the set, there goodbyes said to Chelsea. She is now officially done. All our well-wishes went with her.

May 20, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 125

Five fell in for another 29 minute called set this morning. My throat was a touch phlegmy when I started, but cleared quickly. My waist seemed very functional as I could feel the lead there in almost every single frame.

After the set, there was a question on Diagonal Flying, primarily regarding the awkwardness of the interim movement. I went on to extol the virtues of practice outside of class (this being a seldom-attending UW student) and invite him to be sure to come to summer sessions if and when time permitted.

May 19, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 124

Eight entered for a 29 minute called set this morning. There were enough "new" and rusty people in the group that a called set seemed warranted. It went fairly well, I think, though some folks don't quite get the idea that they should wait (i.e. slow down) until I finish calling a position name before they go barreling into it. *shrug* Oh well.

There were a few questions of which I only remember one at the moment. It was a confirmation that the left foot is not moved back behind the right in White Crane Spreads Wings.

May 18, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 123

Four fumbled in for a 31 minute set this morning. There were questions on Lift Hands, Step Forward, one on timing and one on application. After that question, I reminded two of the folks there that the only time you brought your lead foot back behind the lead leg was in the first Ward Off Left of part 3.

It was a bit of a sad day as I found out that one of my students who has never attended an actual "class" is leaving us this week. She's headed off to Washington state within the next week or so and is unlikely to return. I can say it has been a real pleasure having her at the morning practice sessions. Thank you, Chelsea.

May 17, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 122

Four for seven. Again, thanks to Charlie for leading the group in my absence.

May 16, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 121

Three for 30-ish. Again, I was not present. We had no sessions over the weekend.

May 13, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 120

Five for 30? (A make-up student was present.) I was not present.

May 12, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 119

Four flounced in for a 30 minute uncalled set today. I asked my students to breath directly into their lower Dan Tien today. I also followed this exercise, though in part three I also started drawing in through the back and the front. It was a very interesting experience, very powerful.

After the set there was a question on the height of the elbow for Brush Knee and a question on Repulse Monkey regarding how much waist turn to start. (Not much.)

May 11, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 118

Seven slouched in for a 29 minute called set. Two were UW students making up missed classes while the others were "regulars".

After the set, there were questions on Sweep Lotus, Fair Ladies, and something else which eludes me at the moment. There were a number of questions about the exam tomorrow.

May 10, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 117

Five flew in for a 7 minute form lead by the esteemed Charlie. I was unable to make it again this morning for various reasons.

May 9, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 116

Four found their way in for a 28 (ish) minute set. I was unable to attend. Fortunately, Charlie was able to handle the group.

May 8, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 115

Three threaded their way through the back halls of HEC 110 for a 23 minute uncalled set this morning.

After the set, Charlie and I executed a couple of staff sets.

There were no questions.

May 7, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 114

Four found their way to HEC 110 this morning for a 42 minute called set. It was a bit grueling in places, but good, none-the-less. There were a couple questions after the set, but I don't recall them at the moment. - We didn't do anything after the set as there was someone (very politely) waiting for the room.

May 6, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 113

Six stopped in for a 35 minute called set but only five finished. I'm not sure if the one who left was ill or just busy. There were no questions after the set.

May 5, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 112

Six slipped in this morning for a 30 minute uncalled set. We faced actual south today as opposed to the usual east. I found it quite enjoyable though I noticed a number of people got a bit lost.

After the set, there was a question on Fair Lady Works at Shuttles.

May 4, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 111

Four fell in for a 31 minute uncalled set this morning. The flow seemed very nice today.

After the set, there were questions on Fair Lady Works at Shuttles, Single Whip, and one other which I cannot currently recall. - I do know that I need to re-teach/remind folks about Wave Hands Like Clouds with special focus on the waist movements.

May 3, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 110

Four fluttered in with the snow this morning for a rocketing 6 minute form. Everyone there knows the form fairly well so I felt we could push it a bit. No one died, fell down, or even got notably lost. Following the set, three stayed for a nice 6 minute standing meditation. Hmm. Perhaps we'll have to institute a new policy of doing as much standing meditation as we do form. It could make those days of 42+ minute sets very interesting.

I don't recall any notable questions before or after the set though there was a question about "chaining" the arms during standing meditation. I did my best to explain what it is I feel while holding that shape.

May 2, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 109

Six gathered for a 28 minute called set this morning. The flow seemed good though I felt a shade stiff from the previous evening's activities.

Before the set, there were questions on the breathing for the warm-up exercises and after the set, there were questions on Turn and Sweep Lotus, Roll Back, (Transitional Arm Break), Step Forward, Deflect Downward, Perry and Punch (without the Deflect Downward) regarding the waist turns, and Push also regarding the breathing.

May 1, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 108

Three gathered in HEC 110 for a 24 minute uncalled set. I intentionally sped it up as one of the students there has knee issues and I wished to give that person as much opportunity to complete the form as possible.

There was a follow-up question on Needle At Sea Bottom and Play Lute before the set. If there were questions after the set, I do not currently recall them.

April 30, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 107

Four gathered in HEC 110 for a 29 minute called set. Before the set, there were questions on Needle at Sea Bottom and one other which eludes at the moment. After the set, I reviewed Wave Hands Like Clouds as one of the students had his feet in a rather curious formation.

Shortly after the review of Wave Hands, we yielded to others who wished to use the studio.

April 29, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 106

Six strolled in for a 24 minute called set this morning. After the set there were questions on Turn and Sweep Lotus (right foot placement at the end), Ward Off Right (elbow placement, angle, etc.), and Step Forward, Deflect Downward, Parry, and Punch as far as timing, etc.

April 28, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 105

Seven swerved into practice this morning and even though we don't normally execute a called set on Thursdays, one of my students requested some help in that area, so we strode through a 37 minute called set. Several students kept wanting to speed up at various parts of the form, but by either not watching them or be focusing on my own breath, I was able to hold a relatively consistent pace. I often think I am too easily influenced by outside stimuli.

A couple students were surprised it was so long while one was surprised it wasn't a 40 minute set. There were no questions.

April 27, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 104

Five flowed into a 31 minute uncalled set this morning. I felt quite good after the set even though I'd had little sleep the night before.

After the set, there were several questions on Bend Bow, Shoot Tiger and after demonstrating and really examining the frame, the student was able to improve significantly in the execution.

April 26, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 103

Three slipped in from the cold, wet, morning and after a nice warm-up, executed a 9 minute set this morning. There were no questions.

After the set, two stuck around for just over five minutes of standing meditation. The breathing in through the navel is still quite intense.

April 25, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 102

Five came in for a 24 minute called set this morning. I again emphasized leading from the waist. - There were no questions after the set.

April 23, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 101

Four gathered for a 24 minute uncalled set. I felt so much better after the set. It never ceases to amaze me how good T'ai Chi makes me feel.

After the set, Charlie and I worked on Yang-Family push-hands for about 20 minutes and then followed it up with a couple of runs through the staff set.

April 22, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 100

Six gathered for a 29 minute called set this morning. After the set, there were questions on Roll-Back and Carry Tiger, Return to Mountain.

April 21, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 99

Six for a 26 to 27 minute set. - I slept the sleep of forgetfulness and did not remember my alarms. - Charlie led the group.

April 20, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 98

Five flew in across the freshly fallen snow for a 29 minute called set today. I called it because there was a student there who had only been exposed to part one.

There were no questions before or after the set.

April 19, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 97

Five found their way to practice this morning for a 15 minute uncalled set. After the set, there were questions on Turn and Sweep Lotus and Bend Bow Shoot Tiger. Following Q&A, four enjoyed about 6 minutes of standing meditation.

Although I have often heard the term "belly breathing" it wasn't until recently that I started exploring breathing more than just air into my belly. Either last week or the week before I started visualizing the "breath" entering the belly directly from outside the body. This has had a profound effect on my meditation and the energetics I'm experiencing during said meditation.

April 18, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 96

Six gathered for a 28 minute called set today. There was one new attender from the University class who did fairly well for his first time through the whole of the form. I asked the people there to focus on leading with the waist again, but I found I had more difficulty feeling it while calling the set. A one track mind, or so it would seem.

After the set, there was a question on the direction of Carry Tiger, Return to Mountain.

April 17, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 95

One popped in to HEC 110 for a pleasant warm up and a 4 minute and 30 second set. Oddly enough, I thought I could go faster. Oh well, as it is said, all things with time and practice.

After the set, I left.

April 16, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 94

Three descended on HEC 110 to participate in a 31 minute uncalled set. There were no questions after the set, though one of the students and I worked on the staff set for a while.

April 15, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 93

Six survived a 33 minute called set this morning. The pace seemed pretty good to me and no one else complained, anyway. ;-)  More focus on the waist is required.

April 14, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 92

Two blew in for a 27 minute uncalled set today. Before the set, I worked with the other person there on Separate Feet, specifically the kicks there-in. It went well. During the set we worked more on "rooting".

April 13, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 91

Four fell in to execute a 30 minute uncalled set. I emphasized leading with the waist before we started and apparently I took my own advice as I started to feel connections with the waist today which before now were only cognitive beliefs as opposed to felt experiences. It was a stunningly marvelous set for me and the door to yet another layer, another depth of the form has been pushed-wide. This requires thought and digestion.

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 90

Five gathered for an eight minute accelerated (but complete) set. After the set, we stood for 5 minutes of standing meditation. It was a very nice way to start the day.

It surprised me as the eight minutes this morning seemed much longer and slower than the seven minutes last week Tuesday. But it actually makes sense. At seven minutes (420 seconds), we are executing one position (approximately) every 3.26 seconds whereas at eight minutes (480 seconds), we are executing one position every 3.72 seconds. Now, that's only about a half a second (0.46 seconds) difference per position, but at the rate of position execution, it is about 1/6th longer for each position. At 27 minutes (1620 seconds), we are executing one position every (approximately) 12.56 seconds. If we add 1/6th of that time to each position (approximately 2.09 seconds), we are approaching a 31.5 minute set. Under normal circumstances, this should be quite noticeable.

April 10, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 88

Four gathered in HEC 110 for yet another 29 minute set. My focus strayed into nothingness causing me to pause briefly after Strike Tigers and wonder if we had missed them or not. Other than that, I stove to step as lightly and quietly as possible. There were four instances throughout the set of something audible from one of my steps, which isn't horrible at least when compared with others. Still, much room for improvement.

Before the set, there was a question on the drawing of the hand across the forearm in Fair Lady Works at Shuttles. After the set, Charlie and I went the staff set a couple times with good results.

April 9, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 87

Six shuffled (in some cases) in for another 29 minute set. My balance was a tad strange on some of the pivots into Single Whip, but other than that, all seemed well.

After the set, there were several questions on Taekwondo sparring by one "cross-over" student. After the questions, that student and I went through the first two parts of the staff set several times such that I could teach him the end of part 2 and smooth out some other rough spots.

April 8, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 86

Three showed and Charlie was kind enough to take them through a 29 minute set. I was recovering from a rather long drive.

April 7, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 85

Four gathered for a 27 minute called set this morning. After the set (facing true south again today), there were questions on Ward Off Left and White Crane Spreads Wings.

April 6, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 84

Four gathered for a 29 minute set this morning. For a change of pace, or in this case, face, we faced true south instead of toward the mirrors. It was really quite nice. I found that my Repulse Monkeys have gotten a bit better as far as the width of stance is concerned. Other positions still need work, of course.

April 5, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 83

Six sashayed in for a seven minute set this morning, though only five finished. The timing of the set seemed more consistent today than is usual, especially for a "quick" set.  The set was followed by five minutes of standing meditation for the remaining four.

April 4, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 82

Seven gathered back in the Allen Center today for a called 31 minute set. I asked people to really focus on leading with their waist today which prompted a question after the set regarding Brush Knee. The student in question was focusing so much on using the waist to open the foot between the various Brush Knee frames that they were opening it too far. This was likely due to their habit of opening the foot using the foot or the leg. This then (almost) doubled the effect. - I feel this was a good lesson today.

April 3, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 81

Four gathered today in HEC 110 for a 20 minute uncalled set. It was much nicer today, quieter, calmer, and closer to my "normal" breathing.

After the set, there were questions on Single Whip. One student required an adaptive suggestion. Following Q&A, we worked on a bit of applied T'ai Chi, primarily pushing. After I demonstrated on the one door in HEC 110, and they also had chance to try it, their pushes were much better than when they started. We then moved on to Brush Knee including both the deflection and the single-hand push. I made sure to talk to them about using the edge of the palm as opposed to the flat and worked with them on the concept of "chaining" and rooting.

After the applied work, Charlie and I went through a couple iterations of the staff set.

April 2, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 80

Four gathered in HEC 110 for a very distracting 22 minute set. There were a large (probably around 2 dozen) people traipsing in and out of the room gathering equipment and taking it somewhere else in the building. They seemed to do this as slowly and loudly as possible throughout our warm-up and about 85% of the set. It was, alas, frustrating and distracting.

Of course, the real reason I was frustrated and somewhat displeased is because I had expectations. I had expectations of civility, courtesy, and politeness. Had I had no such expectations, then I would not have been so irked by their untimely actions. It really is true that emotions are up to the person experiencing them.

After the set, I answered a few questions about Golden Cock Stands on One Leg and Needle at Sea Bottom followed by some good conversation mostly about T'ai Chi.

April 1, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 79

Only three gathered for a ~30 minute set. I couldn't make it again due to work constraints. Thanks to Charlie, though, it went well.

March 31, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 78

Five found their way in for a 29 minute set this morning. I had significant issues holding the pace and others had significant issues remembering the form. Oh well. Just one of those days, I think. After the set, there were a few indeterminate questions.

March 30, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 77

Charlie led a called set for three folks taking an undetermined amount of time. :-) (Thank you, Charlie.) I was unable to make it due to various issues, so it's always nice to have a student or two who can step up to the task.

March 29, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 76

Six gathered on this (approaching) pleasant morning for a 13 minute uncalled set. We had one new student join who also attends my UW class. He did quite well for his first time through the whole form, really picked up on the repetition in the form and even managed most of the foot work on the spots he didn't know.

After the set, five of us remained for about five minutes of standing meditation. It was, overall, a very pleasant start to the morning.

March 28, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 75

Seven gathered for a called (with breathing called as well) this frigid March morning. I made a few minor errors while calling the set, but nothing serious. Although no questions were asked after the set, at least 2 people commented that they found it useful.

March 27, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 74

Four again gathered (the same 4) in HEC 110 for a nice warm-up and a very nice 36 minute uncalled set. I think there was a little bit of a speed-up in the latter half of part 2 and again in the latter portion of part 3, but it was still a sufficiently lengthy set.

After the set, there were questions on Double-Wind to the Ears.

Post Q&A, Charlie and I went through the staff set a couple of times.

March 26, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 73

Four congregated in HEC 110 for a very pleasant 27 minute uncalled set. After the set, we did about 5 minutes of standing meditation. As Charlie would say, the set was quite juicy as was the meditation.

March 25, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 72

Four braved the return of arctic temperatures and executed a 22 minute set. The set was intentionally less slow today as one of the practitioners needed to leave early. After the set, there were questions on Crossed Hands and Ride Tiger.

March 24, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 71

Four gathered for a 28 minute uncalled set. There were no questions before or after the set.

Although I only made one obvious mistake, my emotions and thoughts were scattered. The set was helpful, but I could not put myself into it as I usually do.

March 23, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 70

RAMMING SPEED was required to get through the plowed snow and wind-driven drifts by most of the four who gathered this morning for a 25 minute uncalled set. - Although there were no questions, I did re-iterated the importance of turning the waist, especially in positions such as Brush Knee as at least one of the folks there wasn't quite doing that.

March 22, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 69

Spring sprang (officially) late on the 20th, though this morning six practitioners were pelted with ice and snow on both the trip in and out of a 13 minute set. I sped up in part 3 but at the time, it just felt like the form smoothed out.

After the set, five stayed for about 6 minutes of standing meditation. There were no questions regarding the form.

March 19, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 68

Four gathered for a 19 minute uncalled set this morning. - The briefer set was requested. - After the set, we did some push-hands for a while and then ran through the staff set a couple times.

There is no formal practice tomorrow or Monday.

March 18, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 67

Seven marveled their way in from the dark, gray of the cold morning for a 26 minute called set. (Only six finished, one leaving around the time of Fair Lady Works at Shuttles). There were no relevant questions.

March 17, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 66

Eight breezed in for a 29 minute set. It seemed very smooth today except for two places in which my balance wobbled. They weren't normal places like the kicks, rather in transition between Transitional Single Whip and Fist Under Elbow and again between Ward Off Right and Punch Down. *shrug* At least no one was debilitated.

Before the set, there was a question on one of the warm-up exercises and after the set, there was a question on the Kick With Heel right after Double Wind to the Ears.

March 16, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 65

Seven braved the warmer weather for participation in a 28 minute uncalled set.

March 15, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 64

Seven drove or walked in on significantly clearer streets today and although we started a shade late (my fault), we completed a nice warm up and an 8 minute "quick" set followed by comments on the set and about 5 minutes of standing meditation. Before practice, there were questions on breathing in actual combat and general execution of Double Wind to the Ears.

March 14, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 63

Nine braved the almost balmy weather this morning to attend a 21 minute called set. The difference was quite striking between yesterday and today.

Afterwards, there were questions on Ward Off Right (right arm angle and where the arm-break happens) and the timing of Step Back (and) Ride Tiger. Quite a bit of discussion ensued regarding the former questions.

March 13, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 62

Six gathered in HEC 110 for a 40 minute uncalled set. I found this quite relaxing today as did a few others. I used as natural a breathing as possible.

After the set, there were questions on the transition between Brush Knees, Fair Lady Works at Shuttles (in general), and the timing of the step in Single Whip. Post Q&A, we worked a bit more on Whip Kick.

March 12, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 61

Five slid in on the ice this morning to HEC 110 for a warm up and 29 minute uncalled set. After the set, I noted that one of the students was drawing his arms back too far when executing Single Whip. We then worked on "applied" T'ai Chi, specifically, the Whip Kick in Separate Feet.

March 11, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 60

Eight gathered for a 29 minute called (with breathing) set this morning. There were several comments after the set that this was extremely helpful for timing, etc.

March 10, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 59

Seven gathered for a 29 minute set this morning.

After the set, there were questions on timing and breathing.

March 9, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 58

Four brushed away the new snow and sought opportunity to practice this morning. After the warm up, we tried a "fast" set, completing all three parts in almost 5 minutes. We then went back and reviewed part 2 as a called set and at a far more sedate pace.

After the set, there were questions on the changes to Grasp Bird's Tail and the transition out of Wave Hands Like Clouds.

March 8, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 57

Five (not including me) gathered for a 10 minute set led by Charlie.

March 7, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 56

Eight gathered from a dusting of light snow to execute a 25 (almost 26) minute called set this morning. The flow was nice, I thought. Although there were no questions after the set, I did reiterate the need to keep the back straight during positions like brush-left-knee. Some were leaning too far forward.

March 6, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 55

Five gathered for a 23 minute uncalled set this morning. Before the set, there were a few questions on Snake Creeps Down. After the set, there was a question on the Single Whip after Wave Hands Like Clouds.

After the Q&A, we went through the staff set twice.

March 5, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 54

Eight gathered in HEC 110 this morning for a 36 minute uncalled set. It actually felt a bit longer than that, but it was by no means forced for me. The clock in the room had stopped so I had no guide but my own breathing.

After the set we worked on push-hands and then a few minutes of staff.

March 4, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 53

Not much beats freezing rain for "fun" travel. I layer of the stuff coated pretty much every surface making both driving and walking hazardous. It also provided an excellent opportunity to walk "correctly". :-p

Five skated in this morning for a 29 minute called set. It would have been much longer, but I caught sight of the clock late in part 2 and increased the tempo for part 3. I really don't like doing that, but it was that or end the session ten minutes late. It was still nice, but it left no time for questions.

March 3, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 52

Neither Charlie nor I could make this morning's practice. Fortunately, Dave led the group of 5 that did make it in a 20 minute uncalled set. :-)

March 2, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 51

Crisp, bright, and cold describe this morning's conditions quite well. It is actually quite pleasant to see the sun above the horizon before we start our set. Alas, upon the 13th of this month it will again be returned to an hour below the horizon.

Seven gathered this morning for a 24 minute set. One of the people there was commenting that he might prefer a less long set, so I attempted to oblige. After the set, there were questions on the various arm-breaks and related positions throughout the form. I also found this a rewarding series of questions as some of the positions are now making even more sense than they did before (and they made a lot of sense before).

I seem to be getting to the point where the prolonged practice is showing a notable benefit in understanding at any rate. Yesterday, a student in my UW class started asking questions about Fair Lady Works at Shuttles and I realized that A: No one had ever asked me these questions before, and B: with only a moments thought, I could answer them with at least viable if not necessarily strictly canon answer. I need to go back to Master Yang's DVD set and see if he has anything to say on the matters at hand.

March 1, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 50

Bright sun behind a stark cloud-bank made for a startling sun-rise this morning. The various colors combined with the sharp contrast of the clouds was quite beautiful.

Eight arose and assembled for a seven minute set this morning. It was fast, it was aggressive, it was violent, it matched my mood perfectly. How obvious. The way a person does T'ai Chi reflects the person they truly are and today, I was at least aggressive. It felt good, though it feels good to be calm, too.

After the set, there were no questions, so we went into a five minute standing meditation. That was wonderfully calming.

February 28, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 49

Monday dawns fair and chill, which is saying something in that it dawned at all at least before the set. A significant portion of the sun had actually cleared the horizon prior to the commencement of the set. The set itself had 8 people and was 27 minutes long, called. A fair amount of silliness ensued prior to the set this morning's set, too. I'm not complaining. - There were no questions regarding T'ai Chi before or after the set.

February 27, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 48

Four divested the snow from their paths and gathered in HEC 110 for a 31 minute uncalled set. It felt more like 38, but it was quite nice none-the-less.

Before the set, there was a considerable amount of jocularity and a bit of laughing. After the set, there were questions on Turn and Kick with Heel.

After the Q&A, we worked on some push-hands, introducing the less experienced.

February 26, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2010 Day 47

Winter seems to have crept back, at least according to the thermometer.

Seven gathered this morning in HEC 110 for a 26 minute called set. When I started the set, my one knee was really complaining, but by the time I started part 3, it was better than it has been in several weeks, anyway. My opposing shoulder has also been twingey of late, and it too, is feeling better. :-)

After the set, there were questions on width of stance and weight distribution for High Pat on Horse and White Crane.

We would have gone on to work on staff, but we were chased out of the building by a fire (or emergency) alarm. Hopefully all will be resolved by tomorrow.

February 25, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 46

This morning, a train decided to investigate the one set of tracks I have to cross to get to practice. Fortunately, cell service is agreeable in that area and Charlie was able to start the Temple Exercises.

Before the set, one student asked about "Other Transitional Arm-break" (a non-position usually leading into Ward Off Right). After several demonstrations, the lesson was mostly learned. We then proceeded to execute a 22 minute called set. I intentionally worked a bit less slowly than usual due to time constraints.

February 24, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 45

Freezing rain last night and this morning fell upon this snowscaped land slicking all bare surfaces. Perhaps this is a sign of spring?

Seven slid their way in for a 31 minute set. There were no T'ai Chi related questions, but the political discussions both before and after practice were interesting.

February 23, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 44

Five for an 18 minute uncalled set. - The ice-pocked washboard roads do not impress me.

February 22, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 43

Although the blizzard appears to be over, the snow-removal is still underway leaving huge piles of the white stuff dotted around the neighborhood like the tips of gigantic land-born icebergs.

Eight trudged through ice-pocked streets to engage in a pleasant warm-up followed by a complete 11 minute set. After the set we engaged in 6 minutes of standing meditation. It was quite refreshing.

February 21, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 42

Only three braved the blizzard aftermath this morning. I commented that only the crazy people were there this morning, which of course is true. I'm not saying the other people who get up at the crack of dawn to come to practice aren't crazy, mind you.

We had a nice 28 minute called set this morning. I asked that those attending work on rooting their positions. I have no idea how others did, but I felt more connected and more satisfied with the form from a martial aspect than usual. The energy is a bit different, but still very nice.

There were no questions after the set.

February 20, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 41

In the pre-blizzard hours, five gathered for a somewhat less slow set this morning. We took 27 minutes to finish and it honestly felt fast to me after this last week's longer sets.

After the set, there were several questions on Step Forward, Deflect Downward, Perry and Punch.

After the Q&A, we worked briefly on push-hands and then one other and I worked on Staff. Although we didn't really progress in part 2 of the staff form, we did cement a number of the positions.

February 19, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 40

Five gathered in HEC 110 for a 38 minute uncalled set. Before the set, there were questions on Double Wind to the Ears, and after the set there were questions on Bend Bow, Shoot Tiger.

After the Q&A, three of us worked on the staff set for a while.

February 18, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 39

Blustery winds found their way across central Wisconsin today, but the full moon setting on the western rim was truly beautiful.

Seven gathered for a 29 minute called set this morning. After the set, there was a question about the transition from Step Forward to Seven Stars through Bend Bow, Shoot Tiger.

February 17, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 38

Visibility was a bit reduced this morning due to fog. I was lucky to see 25 feet beyond the front of my vehicle. Fortunately, the temperatures remain warm with a promised high of 49 F today.

Eight cleft the thick air this morning and gathered for a 32 minute uncalled set. After the set, there was a question on the breathing in Strike Tigers. There was also a question regarding the reason Bow stance is named as such.

February 16, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 37

Freezing frogs, er, fog shrouded the city this morning in an obscuring mist which gave the perception that the world ended just a few hundred yards away. It was almost calming.

Six gathered for a 31 minute set this morning. We even had a student from a couple years ago join us this morning. She intends to attend at least twice a week. :-) After the set there were questions on the transition into the last Step Forward, Deflect Downward, Perry, and Punch in part 2, Bend Bow Shoot Tiger, the transition from Diagonal Flying into Lift Hands, Step Forward, and the breathing for Fair Lady Works at Shuttles. Over all, a very nice way to start the day.

February 15, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 36

Six attended a 15 minute set led by Charlie. I just couldn't pry myself out of bed this morning. Something about going to bed around 4:00 AM after having worked most of the previous evening and again much of the very early morning. - I know, I know. Excuses, excuses.

February 14, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 35

And a happy Saint Valentine's Day to you, too. The weather is certainly more pleasant than it has been with temperatures hovering around the freezing mark instead of the sub-zero mark. It does make the use of one's T'ai Chi skills a bit more necessary as the ice that's left is far more slippery at this temperature than at -15F.

Eight gathered for a 28 minute called set this morning. It seemed to flow quite well, other than a minor hiccup or two in my head. After the set, there were questions on Fist Under Elbow as to what portion of the forward foot is on the floor, and Single Whip, how straight the right arm is, the hook, etc. All-in-all, a very pleasant morning practice.

February 12, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 34

Six gathered at the HEC 110 today for what started out to be a really long form. One of the students has been curious about a really slow set so I thought to do a 35 minute set or so. After the end of part two, I told them we would be doing part three a bit less slowly. It still turned out to be 37 minutes and we almost doubled the speed of part three. I think it would have been a nice 45 minute set if we'd stayed the course.

After the set, there were questions on Step Forward, Deflect Downward, Perry and Punch, and Apparent Close up. I reminded the students there of how close one really is when utilizing the martial aspects of T'ai Chi and had a cross-over student from TKD there to assist in the demonstration. I also talked about breathing and the concept of breathing out when striking to allow more energy to flow into the technique but also about breathing out when being struck to prevent providing a hard target.

After the Q&A, we did some single-hand push-hands to introduce one student and refresh the others. That went well, too. Over all, it was a very nice practice session. Nothing tomorrow, but we'll be back at it on Monday.

February 11, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 33

This morning at about 4 AM, the temperature just outside my house was -15 F. Thankfully, the winds had subsided. Everything seemed to work a little less well from my garage door, to the house doors, to the grease in my car's joints. Have I mentioned lately that it would seem to be time for warmer weather?

Seven gathered this morning for a 30 minute called set. There are still a few issues with certain people getting well into the next position long before I've called it. Monday may be a good time for a reminder of how to follow a called set.

After the set, one student commented how focusing on the breathing and actually belly-breathing alleviated his back pain issues. Another commented about positive intentions and their influence on daily activities.

February 10, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 32

It was a measly eleven degrees below zero (F) this morning and some people around here seem to think it's cold outside. Today, I would be one of them. The stiff breeze from last night had only partially subsided so even the short walk from the car to the Allen Center was bracing to say the least.

Eight braved the sub-arctic temperatures to participate in a rather pleasant 27 minute set. After the set, I spoke briefly on foot placement in Repulse Monkey and circular to lateral arm movement in Bend Bow, Shoot Tiger.

February 9, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 31

Subzero temperatures did not dissuade five from attending this mornings practice session during which we executed a 31 minute set followed by questions on Fan Through Back (breathing).

February 8, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 30

A month of practice days it has been, though in real time, it is a month and eight. - Parking was scarce this morning, though that's not a bad problem to have at practice. The sky was a light blue with streaks of yellow before we started, even though the air temperature was sub-zero.

Seven gathered for a 14 minute "quick" set this morning followed by about 6 minutes of standing meditation. After the meditation, I reminded people to try to keep their Dan tien's even while practicing the form as it is easy to get into an up and down rhythm, especially at speed.

February 7, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 29

The sky was a definite shade of moderate blue this morning shortly before we started. (And no, I was not significantly late.) Thus, I can reason that the days are in fact getting longer, or more accurately, the amount of daylight is yet again increasing. A day is still 86,400 seconds long, unless you wish to figure in leap years, in which case it should be approximately 86,459.1781 seconds long. Thankfully, we just add a day every four years.

Seven endured the slightly warmed winter weather and gathered for a fairly pleasant 28 minute set. The set was both called by name and by breath count. Although I would certainly not say that it was grueling, it left no margin for thought outside of the form. It was actually vaguely refreshing.

After the set, there were questions on Step Back, Ride Tiger, several on Fair Lady Works at Shuttles, a comment on Snake Creeps Down (as in the student was not aware it was a four count and found it interesting to be breathing at certain times) and a question on Crossed Hands. All in all, I found it a very rewarding session. It was definitely one of those sessions that makes me glad I chose to offer this morning practice thing in the first place.

February 5, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 28

I gray mist hung in the air this morning on the way to practice. It was nice to feel a warmer temperature, but the possibility of the mist freezing is less enjoyable.

Six gathered for a 27 minute set this morning in HEC 110. After the set, there were questions on Wave Hands Like Clouds and Crossed Hands.

At the end of the time, a relatively new student and I worked on the staff set up through Carry Staff to Back and even a little into the next position.

February 4, 2011

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 27

Seven gathered for a 25 minute called set this brisk but beautiful morning. There was a question before the set about keeping the tip of the tongue against the roof of the mouth and breathing and then after the set, another question related to the breathing of Wave Hands Like Clouds.

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 26

Some would say it was cold this morning. With a temp of -1 F, I would be likely to concur.

Nine people (including another from my UW classes) risked exposure for a fairly pleasant 28 minute set this morning. One student made the observation that he found it quite helpful to remain in the correct posture throughout the set. He noted that it helped ease tension throughout the rest of the body.

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 25

Six made it in for a 27-28 minute set. Charlie ran things as I was not there today.

There was a question before the set regarding cranial discomfort during the form and Charlie recommended making the physical connection between tongue and roof of mouth. This seemed to alleviate any discomfort for the individual asking. :-)

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 24

Six gathered for a pleasant warm-up followed by a seven minute uncalled set. After the set, we extended our standing meditation to almost six minutes. All-in-all, a nice way to start the day.

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 23

A blush of snow applied itself to our area as seven of us acquired footing and sprang into our practice room. Being Monday, a called set was executed with the time being only 25 minutes. I did talk briefly after the set about Kick With Left Heel and the fact that it is a 4 count, not a 2 count as some like to do it and then answered  a question through demonstration of Snake Creeps Down into Golden Cock. Lastly, I offered some advice (to the same person who had asked the question) regarding Bend Bow, Shoot Tiger in that they should make the circle with the arms slightly smaller and flatter on the top to simulate the dual punches. It was a good start to a day and a good start to a week.

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 22

Seven gathered in HEC 110 this morning for a very nice 25 minute set. After the set, we reviewed part 1 of the staff form and then added up through Carry Staff to Back. Then Charlie and I went through the whole set a couple times.

T'ai Chi at the Allen Center - 2011 Day 21

The sky after practice this morning was exquisite. Before practice, it was a deep blue ink, darker than it has been the last couple of days, but once the sun actually rose, it was beautiful.

Seven gathered this morning for a delightful 27 minute called set. After the set, there was a question on Play Lute and another on Apparent Close-up. Hopes were high for a good day, and as we all know, hope defeats all good times.
