Happy Solstice. Three threw in this morning for a pleasant warm-up followed by another 13 minute uncalled set. There was brief discussion on Press after the set.
After the 103, two remained for a 3.5 to 4 minute called sword set.

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 337
Four flopped in for a nice warm-up followed by a 15 minute uncalled set. The set flowed well for me today and I was able to show considerable 'intent' in the frames. After the set, there was a question about 'holding the shape' as a concept. I spoke briefly about the idea and demonstrated that doing something other than holding the shape is ultimately self-defeating.
After the 103, two remained for a 4 minute called sword set.

The evening class at the Y went well. There were three absent this evening. After the warm up, I talked a bit about intent, not just showing it, but the intention of placing a body part in the correct location/position. Think it, see it, do it, at least for practice. This is, of course, not what you would usually do in an actual physical confrontation.
Following the mini-lecture, folks working on part 2 continued their practice while folks in part 1 went through the set as far as they know after which I took them through part 1 with detailed movement and body placement.
At the very end, a bade them all return on January 8th, 2013 but we also decided to attempt to practice this coming weekend.

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 334
Seven sidled into HEC 110 this morning for a nice warm-up followed by a 26 minute called set. That length of set hasn't been done for a while in practice and it felt really good. After the set, there were questions on Double Wind to the Ears and the Kick With Left Heel. I also commented on Strike Tiger Left, the back foot pointing in Single Whip, and the weight shifts in Part the Wild Horses Mane.
Following the 103, six remained for some stationary single hand push-hands and some single hand stepping push-hands.
After about 15 to 20 minutes of push-hands, three remained for a quick run through of the sword form. Following the sword form, the same three went through the staff form with careful review of the end of part 2.

Eight people made it in this evening for the sword class. We ran through the set a couple times and reviewed a number of the individual frames though I became distracted with talking about 'whip' in frames like Swallow Swoops Over the Water and Heavenly Horse Flies Over the Waterfall. We took some time to try using the waist to whip the hand into a large pad. Some seemed to understand, some less so.

I also commented on the Strike Tigers and the footwork for Waves Hands Like Clouds.
Following the 103, we went slowly through the sword form. There were questions on Shoot the Wild Goose and Step Over Block Up.
Finally, everyone remained for the restart of the staff form. The new staff student made it up through the first Horse Stance, Chop.

Six sidled in for a 24 minute called set. Following the set, there were questions on Turn and Sweep Lotus and Bend Bow, Shoot Tiger. I also made some comments on the right arm in Single Whip (some were extending the arms too much for the final portion of the frame) and the correct method of turning and foot placement in Diagonal Flying as opposed to the "about face" one of the students likes to do.
After the 103, all six stayed for about 10 minutes of push-hands. Considering the group, we stuck with single arm.
Following push-hands, three remained for sword practice. There were questions on Big Dipper, Swallow Swoops Over the Water, and Black Dragon Wraps Around the Pole.
Finally, two remained for a review and part 1 and 2 of the staff form. Special attention was paid to the first position in part 2 and the rising kick into Pull Down at the end of part 2.

Following the 103, both remained for a 3.5 minute called sword set. There was some discussion of Black Dragon Wraps Around the Pole following the set.

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 321
Four flapped in for a pleasant warm-up followed by an 18 minute uncalled set. I took a more centered starting point and encouraged another student to take my usual spot for a different view. This was beneficial as it allowed me to note a few frames in their form which required a minor amount of adjustment. I was also able to note other frames in other students which also needed some tweaking. I may have to pursue this further in future practice sessions.
After the 103, two remained for a run through of the sword set. There was some mild discussion an Dusting in the Wind.

Following the 103, three remained to run through the sword with special attention to (and a few repetitions of) Present the Ivory Tablet.
I chose to leave at that point. Perhaps the food from yestereve did not agree with me. Perhaps I'm just tired.

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 316
Three eventually threw in for an 18 minute uncalled set. I was late enough today to miss the entire warm-up. It certainly changed how I felt about the set. It wasn't bad, per se, just considerably different. I am certainly more used to doing a warm-up first. When we were done, I felt very much like going right into another practice of the 103.
After the 103, two remained for a 4 minute called sword set.

The evening sword class was again sparse, but 8 is better than 5. We reviewed positions up through White Ape Offers Fruit with special attention on Step Over, Block Up for the students who had not been there last time. Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 315
Two tapered in for a warm up and (almost) 8 minute uncalled set. The flow was pretty good.
We followed the 103 with a 5 minute called sword set with some discussion of Wild Horse Jumps Over the Ravine and Fish Jumps Over the Dragon Gate.
To finish up the practice, we completed almost 12 minutes of standing meditation. This was also quite nice, though I felt cut short by time constraints.

In the University class, we discussed the idea of relaxed but resilient both in push-hands and while practicing the form. After the discussion, I worked for a time with the beginners on corrections while a more advanced student took the people in part 2 through part 1 and part 2. The widest spread issue with the beginners is stance followed by elbows/shoulders.
I traded with the aforementioned student and worked with people in part 2 on breathing.

Three threaded in for an 18 minute set. Unfortunately, I couldn't make the morning set, but I did grab a late lunch which was used largely for a warm-up and 20 minute set in a different building on campus. The space is only really big enough for one and the floor is carpeted concrete, so not my first choice by any stretch of the imagination. Still, it was a nice break from the day and certainly better than nothing.

The evening class was a little sparse due to illness, but still large enough. The beginners were introduced to Fist Under Elbow while the one-attending individual working on part 2 and/or 3 worked on sequence of part 3 and then went back and worked on the Turn and Kick with Heel positions. This seemed largely profitable for everyone involved.

Following the bare-hands form, we worked some more on push-hands. I introduced the Yang Family's (current) Double-Arm Fixed Step method. Although new and somewhat difficult, those there seemed to enjoy it. I look forward to doing more with it soon.
Three remained for a quick (5+ minute called) run-through of the sword form. After, I helped one student with corrections to Birds Lodge in the Forest, but had to leave for other commitments.

After the set, we worked on some push-hands, working primarily on the basics of sticking, adhering, following and listening. There was a brief demonstration of Double Arm Vertical Circle.
Sword followed push-hands but we didn't get much into refining as there were others who needed both rooms.

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 308
Four found their way in for a very nice warm-up followed by a 17 minute uncalled set. This was about a minute faster than I would have liked, but still a very nice set. I asked the practitioners to try to keep their heads up and sink the rest of the body. Reports indicated that this was, at the very least, a good reminder.
After the set, two remained for about 8 minutes of very enjoyable push-hands.

Attendance was somewhat sparse in the University class today, at least with the more advanced class. In the beginning class, we worked on Wave Hands Like Clouds. This will take a bit more work in future, I think, as it is by far the most complex frame the beginners have yet learned, at least as far as doing it correctly. Once some practice of Wave Hands had ensued, the beginners tried single-hand push-hands again with an apparent break-through in understanding.
After a practice of parts 1 and 2, the students working on part 2 started work on four corner push-hands.

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 306
Three thundered (okay, that was me) in for an 18 minute uncalled set. This was by design as one of the practitioners this morning prefers a slightly less slow set. There were no questions on the bare-hands set.
After, two remained for a 5 minute called sword set. In my studies of the sword form, I noticed a very minor change from what I'm doing in Phoenix Spreads Both Wings. The height of the left arm needs to be just slightly lower than the shoulder, about 4 to 6 inches depending on the build of the person executing the frame.

Almost everyone was there for the sword class this evening. I think only one from the 'revised' roster was not there. After a bit of practice from what we learned last time, we proceeded into Scoop the Moon From the Sea Bottom and Embrace the Moon, Naza Searches the Sea, Rhinoceros Gazes at the Moon, Shoot the Wild Goose, and Green Dragon Bears Its Claws. We ran short on time or the last 'Phoenix' move would have been in there, too. We'll get that next time.

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 305
No one made it yesterday. - I still blame the time-change (among other things) for being thrown off in my sleep patterns.
---
Three thinned in for a nice warm up after which two remained for a 4 minute 26 second uncalled set. The set was fairly clean and accurate, but was less smooth than quick sets have been in past. I was very aware of every single weight-shift in the set. I bet those would serve to throw an opponent off in combat. I just need to smooth them out a bit at that rate of execution.
Following the bare-hands, the remaining two went through the sword form for about 5 minutes and then proceeded to stand for about 11 minutes. It was a very nice way to start a Tuesday.

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 304
Five flitted into HEC 110 this morning for a 22 minute called set. There were no questions before or after the set.
After the bare-hands set, all 5 remained to work on about 25 minutes of pushing hands. That was quite enjoyable.
Following push-hands, 4 remained for a called run through the sword. I answered the question from yesterday about the left hand in Black Dragon Whips Its Tail. There was also some discussion of the left hand in Rhinoceros Gazes at the Moon as well.
Finally, all 4 remaining engaged in a bit of staff practice. I reviewed the end of part 2 and launched into part 3 up to the first Cross Stance Wheel Chop.

Six slithered in to HEC 110 for a 23 minute called set this morning. It was nice to see a (relatively speaking) new face there as well as the 'old' regulars. I made my standard 'follow along as best you can' and 'work on the foot-work first' speech before the set, but the 'new' person did quite well.
Four stuck around after the set for a 5 minute called sword set. There were questions on Cartwheel Right and everything after Fish Jumps Over the Dragon Gate.
Finally, three remained to review parts 1 and 2 of the staff set. I only added one position at the beginning of part 3 for various reasons.

In the University class, the beginners received another brief lecture on relaxation. We then went through a few minutes of standing meditation which was made far more difficult than necessary as the construction work continues in the basement turning our room into a huge drum. The hammer-drilling was really quite obnoxious. Some of the beginners seemed to really get into the meditation. Others were very blase about it. This was not unanticipated. They ended with some more work on breathing.
The people working on the second section finished part two today. Other than a mild miscommunication with the the student helping me, overall, things went well.
Two remained afterward for a quick run at the sword.

In the evening sword class, everyone who is still in the class showed up, which was really nice. We reviewed the positions from last time and then proceeded up through Roc Spreads Its Wings. Although there were a number of positions between Heavenly Horse Flies Over the Water Fall, most of them were some type of repeated position. There are about 24 positions left and 4 or 5 weeks left. (According to the calendar 5, but really 4 considering the number of students who will be gone by the last class.) That's an average of 6 positions a class. That's difficult, but the good news is that there are really only 10 new positions in that group which makes it somewhat more manageable, or at least it would if many of them weren't clustered around the very end. Oh well. I guess we can only do what we can with what we have. :-)

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 299
Two traipsed in for a late-starting warm-up followed by a 6 minute 15 second set and a 5-ish minute called sword set. It was nice to be back. We ran out of time for any standing meditation.
On the way out, we enjoyed the first 'sticking' snow of the season.

---
In the University class, the beginners were subjected to some commentary on some of the ten essentials. Following that, they learned more of the breathing while the people in part two worked up through the last Turn and Kick with Heel. That position will need to be reviewed.

---
The evening class was a bit sparse with only 5 total people in attendance, but at least one potential new member stopped by to watch for a while. After introducing Carry Tiger Return to Mountain and discussing some relaxation techniques, I bowed the two beginners out and the three remaining ran through the sword form.

Two traversed chilled pavement and sharp night air to enter the Allen Center and after a warming warm-up, went through a fairly even paced 23 minute uncalled set. Post set, another student stopped in briefly but wasn't up for the practice itself.
After a bit of conversation, one remained for a 3.5 minute uncalled and slightly corrected sword set. We'll have to talk about that, later.

Three thri-kreened into HEC 110 for a 23 minute called set. Following the set, there were questions on the breathing for push and something else which currently eludes me.
Behind the bare-hands set, we thrust our way through the sword form. I managed to wrap my tassel in a spot I had never wrapped my tassel before. It was quite bizarre. Post set, there were questions on Wasp Enters the Cave so we went through that a few times. By the end, the question was largely answered. The question from a couple of days ago about Rhinoceros Gazes at the Moon was also answered.
Finally, we cracked our way through the staff form. Then we went back and I talked about Pull Down. We are now done with part 2 of this form.

Eight idled in for a 21 minute called set. There was a question on the breathing in Turn and Chop and another on the 8 basic energies. With those answered, I went on to comment on the importance of footwork in Repulse Monkey.
Following the bare-hand form, we worked on some push-hands, largely introducing it to most of the people there, but I also spent some time noodling with a more experienced student.
Sword was next. We did a 5 minute run through of the whole form followed by a review of the form up through Compass Points.
Last, and probably least, we ran through the staff set in full and then went back and up through the rising kick and the Pull Down in part 2.
All in all, it was a good two hours. :-)

Three threw in for a standard warm up followed by a 4 minute 10 second set. The flow seemed pretty good today, though perhaps not quite as good as the previous Tuesday. One of the other students found a stop watch so I decided to try to wear it around my neck. This did not go overly well. Perhaps an external location not around my neck would work better in future.

After the bare-hands set, three remained for a run at the sword form followed by further review of the positions up through Embrace the Moon.
Finally, we had opportunity to work in the staff form up through Turn and Poke.

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 275
Three threaded into the Allen Center for a 23 minute uncalled set. One suggestion was made after the set that I start opening my hand again for White Snake Puts Out Tongue. I'll consider it. :-p
Two remained for a 5 minute romp through the sword set. The left hand on Roc Spreads Its Wings remains illusive.

In the afternoon University class, the beginners learned Step Forward, Deflect Downward, Perry, and Punch and were introduced to Apparent Closeup. The upper level folk made it through the first Separate (right) Foot and well into the second. We'll finish up next time.

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 274
Six slunk in for a 23 minute uncalled set this morning. After the bare-hands set, there was a question on the hook in Single Whip. I also commented on the separation of the arms and the elbow/angle of the forearm in Fair Lady Works at Shuttles, the latter of which also applies to High Pat on Horse.
Four remained for a 5 minute run at the sword.

Three threw in for a 4.X minute set with largely good flow this morning. Following the set, a 4.X minute called sword set which in turn was followed by 12 minutes of standing meditation. All-in-all, a very nice way to start a Tuesday.

Attendance was down again in the evening class, but the beginners reviewed Lift Hands, Step Forward, and White Crane Spreads Wings. We also added in Brush Left Knee Twist Step.

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 271
Six slightly different folk slewed into HEC 110 this morning. After a standard warm-up, we enjoyed a 23 minute called set. After the set, while one ducked out for personal reasons, I chatted briefly with another student about using T'ai Chi principles in a hard-style (Taekwondo) environment.
01, 02, 03, 05, 07, 10
Upon resumption of the class, only 5 remained to go through a complete sword set and then return and review frames up through the second Little Dipper. There were questions on Dusting in the Wind which apparently assisted more than the questioner.
Finally, four returned to the staff where we added "Left Bow Stance, Carry Staff to Back" and "Step Up, Right Bow Stance Tip Up."

Six swept in to HEC 154 for a 22 minute called set. I am confident there were questions, but I do not recall what they were.
We stayed there for a while but shortly after 9 were asked to leave and thus sought out the racket-ball court. What a racket that was. :-p Quarters were cramped and the echo made it very difficult to hear the position names, but all six of us managed to work through the sword form once and then went back and I retaught positions up through the second Little Dipper. Alas, no room for staff.

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 266
Three throttled their way back into the Allen Center for a 4 minute uncalled set. The flow was actually really nice. After the bare-hands set, all three remained (one with a borrowed sword) for a 5 minute called sword set. There were no questions after the sword set, so I left early (along with another) and passed on the standing meditation today. My legs just didn't seem to have the stamina at that time. Hopefully, I'll have a chance later today.

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 265
Five flowed back into the Allen Center for a 23 minute uncalled set. Although it was 23 minutes, the last half of part 3 was definitely accelerated a bit. Apparently the breathing exercises have been working. :-p
Two remained after the bare-hands set to practice (and one to watch) a quick (4 minute) run through of the sword. It felt pretty good until I wrapped the tassel on Present the Ivory Tablet. Oh well. Hopefully I will be better next time.

On a mostly unrelated note, there was some discussion of Tai Chi Easy (TM) this morning shortly before and a bit into the warm-ups. Although I am a wholehearted supporter of the energetic arts (Qi Gong, especially) I think it should be noted that Tai Chi Easy (TM) is NOT T'ai Chi Ch'uan. Although the health-aspect energies are quite similar, the reasons for practicing can be very different. - Awareness is often useful.

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 264
Four fiddled into HEC 110 again today for a 24 minute called set. After the set there were questions on several positions which currently elude me. Following the Q&A, we went through the sword set once and then went back to work on the finer points of everything up through Agile Cat Seizes the Rat. Finally, we drew our staves and worked up through Half Horse Stance Wheel Chop (again), Lift Left Knee Wheel Chop, and Right Bow Stance (left) Wheel Chop.

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 263
Four flopped into HEC 110 for a 26 minute called set. Following the bare-hands set, there were numerous questions on numerous frames in the set including but not limited to Play Lute, Lift Hands (&) Step Forward, Fair Lady Works at Shuttles, Turn and Sweep Lotus, et. al.
Following the bare-hands set, we ran through the sword set once and then moved on to the staff. The latter was somewhat challenging to teach as we were starting part two, the first position being Half Horse Stance, Wheel Chop. The stance is relatively speaking, easy, but the movement of the staff can be challenging. We spent a fair amount of time on the position but it was largely successfully learned.

The afternoon class today progressed differently than I expected, but still went well. We reviewed Lift Hands, Step Forward and I then introduced White Crane Spreads Wings. In that, we also covered Empty Solid Stance and a couple of the different ways Lift Hands, Step Forward can be done.
In the advanced class, we also covered Lift Hands, Step Forward but from Diagonal Flying instead of Single Whip. We then added White Crane Spreads Wings, and Brush Left Knee, Twist Step. I also started them on Needle at Sea Bottom, but we'll need to work on that more.
After class, there were several questions, mostly on Repulse Monkey.

The stress reduction class this afternoon went well. I had about 23 students in attendance. I worked with them on the Temple Exercises, explained some of the benefits of T'ai Chi, refereed to the medical research being done and finally talked about being in the now. - I also included a very brief demonstration of the martial mind-set in T'ai Chi.
---
Only 11 of the sword students showed up this evening, but we reviewed what we had done last time and then proceeded to add Little Dipper, Bird Returns to the Nest, and Agile Cat Seizes the Rat. We spent quite a bit of time on the first of this series as well as some correction on the Block and Sweep (Right to Left). I don't think I talked over much about where the sword started from for the second Block and Sweep.
Next week I need to talk about the rounded arm positions in line with the side of the torso for both of the recently learned thrusts.

Four frosted in over frosted grass for a 22 minute uncalled set. The consistency of the speed needs a little work, at least today, but it went well none-the-less. One student and I chatted briefly about pivot points on the foot, but I recall no other questions from the bare-hands set.

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 256
Six slunk into HEC 110 for a 19-ish minute called set. It didn't feel that fast but I was feeling some irritation which must have accelerated my breathing. *shrug* Oh well.
After the set, there were numerous questions including some on Step Forward, Deflect Downward, Parry and Punch (the right hand just before the punch), the transition of Strike Tiger into Turn and Kick With Heel, and Part the Wild Horses Mane, after which I added some comments on Turn and Chop (right hand flat vs. fist), Step Forward to Seven Stars (right hand fist), and Turn and Sweep Lotus (hand positions during the turn).
As time was short, five followed that with a run through of the sword. That produced questions on Agile Cat Seizes the Rat and Bee Enters the Hive.
Alas, we did not have time for staff today.

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 255
Two tromped in through the rather damp morning air for a 22 minute uncalled set. We faced as close to true north as the building walls allow and had a look at ourselves in the mirrors from the other side. I recall no relevant positional questions after the bare-hands set.
Both remained for a 5.5 minute run at the sword which went fairly well. There was a question on Opening and some discussion of Dusting in the Wind.

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 254
Three threaded in for a 21 minute uncalled set. We switched to true south (or as close as the building's southern wall allows) and got a different angle in the mirrors. It was educational.
Following the bare-hands set, we continued facing the southern accent wall and worked through a 4.5 minute called sword set. Following that set, there were questions on Black Dragon Wraps Around the Pole and the second Dusting in the Wind.
Following the sword set, one zealot remained for another go at the bare-hands set. Enjoy. ;-)
---
In the University class today, the beginners worked with an advanced student up through Single Whip while I worked with the students in part two on Transitional Single Whip and Fist Under Elbow. All-in-all, it was a very satisfying experience.

We then reviewed Prepare, Opening, Three Rings Circle the Moon, and Big Dipper. We then added Swallow Swoops Over the Water and Block and Sweep (both sides). I showed them Little Dipper, but will cover that in detail next time.

Three threw in for a 5 minute uncalled set this morning. Following the set, we did a 5 minute called sword set. Following the sword set, I made a few comments on Phoenix Spreads Right Wing and Roc Spreads Its Wings. Since everyone had somewhere else to be, we left a little early and skipped the typical standing meditation.

In the University class today, the beginners made it up through Press and discussed in depth the positions of the hands, (i.e. Seated, Unseated, Reverse Seated, Tiger Mouth, and Tiger Eye) while the more advanced folks had a good review of Carry Tiger Return to Mountain. I chatted briefly with the advanced folks on the arm-break in Carry Tiger and started them on Transitional Single Whip. Fist Under Elbow next time.
---
In the much fuller evening class, we also made it up through Press and also revisited the hand positions. Some excellent questions were brought up by the youngest practitioner there, the best of which was, "What if...." - This lead to the 'tool box' discussion which is always an important viewpoint for better understanding.

Four folded into the Allen Center studio B for a 22 minute uncalled set. I commented briefly on Step Forward to Seven Stars as one participant was exceeding the recommended 30% weight shift into the front foot.
Following the bare-hands set, three remained for a 5 minute called sword set. There was a question on Black Dragon Wraps Around the Pole (Left and Right) which I believe I answered to the questioner's satisfaction.
My mind was preoccupied today. I did manage to calm it some time early in part 3, but until then, I was just coasting.

The sword set was next. All three went through a 5 minute called set followed by further review of Prepare, Opening, Three Rings Circle the Moon, and Big Dipper.
Finally, we worked on staff for several minutes reviewing the positions from yesterday and adding in Left Backward Cross Stance, Wheel Chop and Turn Over 180 degrees, Wheel Chop. Hopefully more next weekend.

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 249
Five flanked their way into HEC 110 this morning for a 13 minute called set. We sped things up a bit as one of the group had to leave a bit earlier than usual. Before the bare-hands set, there was a question on High Pat on Horse. After the set, there was a question on Lift Hands Step Forward and Play Lute, specifically the differences in application between them.
After Q&A on the bare-hands, all five remained for a 5 minute called sword set. Following the set, there were questions on Step Over, Block Up, Black Dragon Wraps Around the Pole, and Spirit Points the Way. We then went back and reviewed the finer details of Prepare through Big Dipper.
Last, but not least, three remained for some work on the staff. - I ran all the way through the set to refresh myself on the moves and energies of said weapon after which we went through Ready position, Left Bow Stance (and) Chop, Right Bow Stance (and) Upward Cut, Right Empty Stance Block and Strike Left, and finally Left Empty Stance Block and Strike Right.

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 248
Four eventually flapped in for a 15 minute uncalled set. After the set, I asked the other three to do White Crane Spreads Wings but found it to be quite good.
Three remained for a 4.5 minute called sword set. There were no questions post set.

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 247
Three threaded in to the Allen Center this morning for a 23 minute uncalled set. There were no questions.
All three remained for a 5 minute called sword set. Before the set, I made some comments on the left hand position in Roc Spreads Its Wings through the transition into Scoop the Moon From the Sea Bottom (and Embrace the Moon).
---
In the afternoon University class, the first group was trained in the form up through Ward Off Left and had Ward Off Right demonstrated. Meanwhile, the second group managed Carry Tiger, Return to Mountain though I still want to talk about what is happening with the arm-break as far as the 'grab' and twist before the strike.

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 246
Five flinted into to the Allen Center for a 22 minute called set. There was some discussion of position ending points, specifically in Snake Creeps Down.
Following said discussion, a 7 minute sword set was enjoyed by 4 of the 5.
---
This evening, we enjoyed our first sword class of the semester. I have 14 students which may be pushing the capacity of the room for sword, but we'll see. Not all 14 were there.
We talked about the correct way to hold the sword based on the frame and/or position within the frame, we went over the exercise of Split, Seat, Circle, Seat (rinse, repeat) and then we went through Prepare, Opening, Three Rings Circle the Moon, and Big Dipper. I plan to (depending on who is there) repeat portions of this lesson on this coming Saturday.

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 245
Three thunked in for a 5 minute set this morning. Following the bare-hands set, all three remained for a 6 minute sword set which in turn was followed by about 10 minutes of standing meditation.
---
In the University class, we managed to get lined up, get all the way through a warm-up routine and get into the very start of the set. I also distributed several hand-outs including part 1, part 2 (where needed), terms and names, temple exercises and the list of the Ten Essentials. I neglected to pass out the more descriptive sheets of the Ten Essentials. We'll try for Thursday.
---
In the evening class, I lost one (temporarily I hope) and gained four. The class is now up to 12, assuming my math and memory are working, anyway. ;-)
We got through the warm up with fewer explanations than last time and made it into Ward Off Left.

Four flowed in to the Allen Center this morning for a 25 minute uncalled set. There were no questions before or after the set.
Following the bare-hands set, three remained for a 5ish minute sword set. There was one question on the curling of the sword from the end of Black Dragon Wraps Around the Pole to Spirit Points the Way.

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 243
Five forked in to HEC 110 this morning for a 23 minute (and several seconds) called set. There was one question on the transition between Repulse Monkey and Diagonal Flying.
Due to others having a reservation to use the room at 9 AM, we altered our order of operations. We jumped right to teaching the staff set for several minutes followed by a complete run-through by Charlie and me. At about 5 minutes to nine, we were reminded of the other folk's reservation (very politely) by one of the young ladies in participation. We quickly swapped rooms so that we were practicing sword in HEC 154 and they had 110 to themselves.
After a complete but fairly slow sword set, we discussed the correct method of doing Present the Ivory Tablet. Then we faced sideways to the mirrors and did the set again. There was one spot where it felt a little odd, like I should have been doing a different position, but largely, it felt fine. I did have opportunity to notice that I need some work on the angle of my sword in positions like Raising the Curtain and Black Dragon Wraps Around the Pole (Right). I took the opportunity to talk about the ideal of making yourself the center of the form. That way, it doesn't matter which direction you start, you are not relying on 'the wall with the mirrors' or 'the wall with the fire extinguisher' (etc.), you're relying on your own internal sense.
Anyway, it was a good way to start a Sunday.

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 242
Six slid into HEC 110 for a 22 minute called set this morning. After the set there were some questions from and a few helpful comments directed to our newest attendee.
Following the bare-hands set, five remained for a couple goes at the sword. There was a question on Present Ivory Tablet which, it turns out, is almost identical to Compass Points.
Finally, four fell in for a floundering start to the staff form. I haven't done the staff form, let alone taught it, for some time now. Fortunately, after a full run through by myself and Charlie, and a few false starts at teaching, we reviewed several of the starting positions.
I'm not sure I can teach two weapons at once. I guess we'll find out.

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 241
Three threw in for a 24 minute uncalled set. There was a question on the right shoulder in Single Whip which was largely answered by correcting the angle between the arms. After the bare-hands set, two remained for a five minute run-through of the sword. I need more practice at speed to be able to control the tassel effectively.
September 6, 2012
Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 240
Two trotted in this morning for a 22.5 minute uncalled set facing 'true north'.. Directly after the set, we ran through the sword form (facing true West) for about 5 minutes. Other than trying to skip ahead in the positions, it went fairly well.
September 5, 2012
Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 239
Four furled in for a 24 minute uncalled set. After the bare-hands set, three remained for a 5 minute sword set.
September 4, 2012
Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 238
Three threatened a 4.5 minute bare-hands set followed by a 5 minute sword set. We wrapped it up with about 11 minutes of standing meditation.
September 3, 2012
Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 237
Three thronged in for a 23 minute mostly uncalled set. After the set, we discussed the transition between Turn and Sweep Lotus and Bend Bow Shoot Tiger.
Once the bare-hands set was complete, all three remained for a six minute run at the sword. We discussed Step Over Block Up (Left and Right) and then did the set again. The last question I recall was on Spirit Points the Way.

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 236
Two trepanned into HEC 110 this morning for a 23 minute uncalled set. Before the set we talked briefly about the 'change' to the hands in Turn and Sweep Lotus. Following the bare-hands set, we took a couple of runs at the sword. It is obvious to me that I still need work on controlling the tassel 'at speed'. After the sword set, we spent some extra time on the last four positions of the sword set.
September 1, 2012
Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 235
Four (eventually) arrived for a 16 minute uncalled set. I was aiming for something a few minutes less slow, but that's quite all right. After the set, there were question on Turn and Sweep Lotus.
Following the bare-hands set, three remained for a stab at a six minute sword set. Following the set, I reviewed Black Dragon Wraps Around the Pole and Spirit Points the Way. We also discussed some of the finer points of Phoenix Spreads Left Wing. We wrapped it up at about 9:30.
August 31, 2012
Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 234
Two tipped in this morning, but one had to leave early, so one eventually went through an 11 minute set facing 'real' south mainly so I could check stances and positions in the mirror. I left directly after the bare-hands set.
August 30, 2012
Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 233
Three threw in for a 24 minute uncalled set. Directly following the set, Charlie and I went through a 5 minute called sword set. It was quite a nice practice.

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 232
Three threaded their way in for a 23 minute uncalled set. After the set, I discussed the change in the arms for Turn and Sweep Lotus as one member present had not been informed.
Following the bare-hands set, one remained for a 3 minute sword set. - The flow is starting to feel really good with the sword for me. This was an uncalled set and that seemed to help my flow considerably. I'll have to try this from time to time with the others that have learned the whole of the sword form. Now, if I can just keep the new tassel out of my face, it'll be great. ;-)

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 231
Two toppled in for a 14 minute uncalled set today. There was a question on Turn and Kick with Heel (the first one) and Turn and Kick with Heel (the last one).
After the bare-hands section, Charlie and I stood for about 11 minutes.

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 230
Three threw in to the Allen Center for a 21 minute uncalled set. After the bare-hands set, two remained for a 5 minute sword set with a bit of attention to Scoop the Moon From the Sea-Bottom before the set.
August 26, 2012
Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 229
One whelped into HEC 110 for an 8 minute set followed by a 4 minute sword set. Questions were not answered and a 'good practice' was wished to the gaggle thronging into the room.
August 25, 2012
Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 228
Two traipsed in for a 22 minute called set this morning. Following the set, there was a question on the transition between Step Forward to Seven Stars and Step Back, Ride Tiger.
After the bare-hands portion, we moved into sword. Following the set, I answered questions on Little Dipper, Rhino Gazes at the Moon vs. Reigning in the Horse, and several on Push the Boat With the Current.
---
In the later set, after a brief warm-up (with explanation and corrections), we did part part one and part two up through High Pat on Horse. We then added and repeated Separate Feet.
Post bare-hands, we worked on the sword form up through Fishing with special attention to Phoenix Spreads Left Wing and Fishing.
All told, about 2.5 hours of T'ai Chi today. :-)

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 227
Three (eventually) threaded their way in through the rain-drops for a 23 minute uncalled set. I think I may have to run a corrections set from time to time as I'm beginning to see a bit of slop in the set, myself included.
After the bare-hand set, Charlie and I remained for a very nice 5 minute sword set.

August 22, 2012
Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 225
One came in for a 21 minute set. Shortly before the time allotted expired, another ducked in for some assistance with part one.
---
For the afternoon set, two attended an impromptu and somewhat unexpected gathering in the HEC for a 14 minute called set followed by questions on Transitional Single Whip into Fist Under Elbow and Diagonal Single Whip. Further explanations and comments were made on Step Forward, Deflect Downward, Parry and Punch as well as Wave Hands Like Clouds.
Following the bare-hands section, while the one student worked on some very important course work, I practiced alone with a staff set followed by a sword set done with a foil. (Talk about 'whip-like-action'. ;-)
This has certainly improved my outlook for the rest of the day. :-)

Three thronged the Allen Center this morning for a 7 minute called set. After the set, there was a question on the difference between Punch Down and Punch Groin followed by discussion of posture and body mechanics.
Two remained for a 4 and something minute sword set. We chose to forgo standing this morning due to time constraints.

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 223
Two (eventually) made their way in for a 17 minute uncalled set. I was quite late, but made it in time for the last few minutes of the warm-up and the entire set. I could certainly tell the difference in my performance. Physically, things were fine, but mentally, I was distracted.
On an interesting note, the sunburn on my neck, although 'heated' during the set did not cause me discomfort during practice. After... *shrug*
Following the bare-hands, one remained for a 4 minute sword practice.

August 16, 2012
Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 219
Three threaded their way in between the residual rain-drops for a 22 minute uncalled set. Part two was a little less slow and part three was a little more slow. Eventually, perhaps consistency will be the rule. ;-)
After the bare-hands set, two remained for a six minute run at the sword set. There was brief discussion of Step Over, Block Up and (from yesterday) the motion of the sword between Swallow Picks Up Mud and Roc Spreads Its Wings. (Think circular.)

August 14, 2012
Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 217
Two transported in for a 4 and something minute set followed by a 4 and 5 minute run-through of the sword. After that, we still had time to 'stand' for about 11 minutes. The standing is definitely getting better for me. :-)
August 13, 2012
Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 216
Three thinned the morning mists with an 18 minute uncalled set this morning. Prior to the set, I commented on a slight difference in Turn and Sweep Lotus and the obligatory waist-turn in Bend Bow, Shoot Tiger.
Following the bare-hands set, Charlie and I remained for a run-through of the sword set. This is the second day with my new tassel and I have to admit, it's considerably different. It feels like it weighs almost twice what my old tassel does and the same moves now cause a significantly larger amount of movement in said tassel. I keep getting thumped in the chest or neck. At least it tends to stay off my wrist or blade. :-)

August 11, 2012
Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 214
Six sidled in for a 25 minute called set. There were questions on the transition between Brush Right Knee and Brush Left Knee as well as a question on hand structure.

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 211
Three throttled down to go through an 18 minute uncalled set. A brief conversation ensued regarding the upcoming classes. Beginner's classes start at the YMCA on Tuesday, September 4, 2012 at 7:30 PM in the APR while Advanced T'ai Chi (i.e. sword) is likely to start on Wednesday, September 12, 2012 at 7:45 PM, also in the APR. I'm seeking further information via email from my supervisor there. The program guide at the YMCA can be viewed here: http://www.spymca.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/spymca-fall-guide-2012-web.pdf

August 6, 2012
Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 209

August 5, 2012
Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 208
Three thumped in to HEC 110 for a 24 minute called set. Following the bare-hands set, two went through the sword form twice with special attention to the last half-dozen frames while one watched from the side-lines.
August 4, 2012
Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 207
Three threaded their way through narrow, twisted, hallways to HEC 110 for a 19 minute uncalled set. There was a question on the transition between Parry, Block, and Punch and Ward Off Right affectionately called 'Other Transitional Arm-Break' and a brief review of Gold Cock.
Following the bare-hands set, we ran through the sword set a couple of times with special attention to Black Dragon Wraps Around the Pole.

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 206
Four filed in for a 22 minute called set. An observation was made of a first semester student indicating similarities in positions such as Part the Wild Horses Mane and Ward Off Right. I enjoy it when my students demonstrate cogent thought. :-)
All four remained (but one watch) for a 6 minute sword set.

August 2, 2012
Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 205
Three thudded in for a 22 minute called set followed by about 6 minutes worth of sword. I made one correction in Tiger Holds Its Head but didn't notice anything else with the one experienced sword player. The other present was a first-semester student who happened to be in town.
August 1, 2012
Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 204
Three thronged the Allen Center this morning for a 21 minute uncalled set. There were no questions on the bare-hands sot.
The sword set ensued thereafter lasting just over 5 minutes. There was some healthy discussion of Dusting in the Wind and a recap of the last half-dozen positions or so.

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 203
Four flooded the Allen Center for a 5 minute uncalled set. Following the bare-hands set, We flowed into a 5 minute sword set with post-set questions on the last half-dozen frames. Though we were running a little late, we still took 10 minutes for standing meditation.
I noticed today that at just after the 10 minute mark, my body really started to relax. I think I could have stood for another 5 to 10 minutes this morning. It was very nice.

July 29, 2012
Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 201
Two topped off the weekend with a 27 minute uncalled set in HEC 110. Following the bare-hands set, both remained for a slower and a less slow sword set with a few focused positions here and there.
July 28, 2012
Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 200
Two tapped into HEC 110 for a 13 minute uncalled set followed by a couple of runs at the sword. There were several parts that were repeated to good outcome.
July 27, 2012
Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 199
The same two from yesterday tried and executed a 22 minute set. I'll get there soon, I promise. ;-)

July 23, 2012
Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 195
Upon the three-year anniversary of starting this BLOG, two trickled in for a 23 minute uncalled set. It was really quite a nice set in my opinion.
After the bare-hands set, Charlie and I went through the sword form in full and then focused on a few positions near the end.

July 22, 2012
Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 194
Two tramped in to find HEC 110 in significant disarray. It would appear that some unsupervised basket-ball campers got in and caused the mess. Yesterday, the doors were open when we arrived and so I left them that way. Today when we left, I made sure they were shut and locked.
The set was a somewhat more traditional 22 minutes today, uncalled. Following the bare-hands set, Charlie and I drove through the sword form a couple of times before spending time on the footwork for Cartwheel Right and a reminder of the more correct method of doing the last half-dozen or so positions. The reminder was of equal value for both of us.
July 21, 2012
Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 193
Three threaded through basket-ball camp infested hallways into HEC 110 today for an 18 minute called set. I found it quite enjoyable if a bit less slow than usual. There is power in me yet. My race is not yet run. ;-)
Following the bare-hands set, all three remained for practice on the sword focusing primarily on the beginning and the end, but with at least one visit to something around the Cartwheels.

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 187
One went in for a warm-up, about 5 minutes of standing, a 5 minute Taekwondo-ized set, and a couple of passes at the sword form. The first pass at the sword form after the bare-hands set was a mess. Mixing the energies like that is something I'm not accustomed to doing, but after a moment to calm the aggression, I was able to execute the second pass at the sword form smoothly and relatively precisely.
July 11, 2012
Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 186
Two tuned in for a 23 minute uncalled set. After the bare-hands set, there was one question on Strike Tigers which I clarified. This was something that had been changed in my teaching since the last conference.
Following the bare-hands set, I remained to practice sword.

July 10, 2012
Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 185
Two trotted in for a 6.5 minute bare-hands set followed by a run at the sword form. Following sword, we both did about 10 minutes of standing meditation. I played with some different energy points and found I was better grounded at the end of the standing. This warrants further investigation.
July 9, 2012
Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 184
Three thronged back into the Allen Center this morning for a 22 minute uncalled set. With no questions on the bare-hands set, two remained for a called (mostly correctly) sword set. The only question the sword set was a revisit of Three Rings Circle the Moon.

Two trenched in for a 4 minute and 30 second bare-hands set followed by a run-through of the sword and about 11 minutes of standing meditation.

June 27, 2012
Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 173
Two trotted in for a 21 minute uncalled set today. After being away for six days, it was amazing how good doing the set felt. My focus was actually pretty good, too.
After the bare-hands set, we ran through the sword set a couple of times, the first one as a refresher for everyone there and the second closer to 'speed'. All-in-all, an excellent way to start the day.

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 163
Five flowed into HEC 110 for a 20 minute uncalled set. There were several questions after the set including one on ????. The right arm comes in and down in front of the right shoulder.
After the bare-hands set, four stuck around for a run at the sword form followed by some details of pretty much all the positions after Fish Jumps Over the Dragon Gate. After the details, most of us went through the set again.

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 154
Four flopped in for our old friend, a 27 minute uncalled set. After the set, there was a question on Single Whip.
After Q&A, we went through the sword set. I spoke briefly about the initial Step Over and Block Up (Right to Left) and answered questions on Fair Lady Works at Shuttles. Even in the sword form, that Fair Lady is a pain. ;-)

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 152
Two tramped in for a 4 minute and 22 second uncalled set. After the bare-hands set, we went through sword a couple times with special attention to the last dozen moves or so. Following T'ai Chi, we did about 10 minutes of standing meditation. It took me a solid half of that to relax. I have too much invested in the outcome of today. Now I must learn to let that go, too.
June 4, 2012
Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 151
Three stepped in for a 25 minute uncalled set this morning. One of three just returned from a bit of a sabbatical (about a week), so it was quite nice to have her back.
After the set, I commented briefly that one student needs to focus on getting the back foot correctly turned at the end of Single Whip while both need to be careful about launching out of Snake Creeps Down.
Once the bare-hands bit was done, Charlie and I ran through a quick sword set. Two minor corrections occurred after on Raising the Curtain and Spirit Points the Way.

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 148
Three threaded their way in for a 23 minute called set. No questions arose before or after the set, so all three of us ventured into the sword form. In that, there was a question regarding Scoop the Moon from the Sea Bottom (and embrace the Moon). With that question answered, I assisted the beginner by taking her through the first section up through Phoenix Spreads Right Wing a couple of times. We then had a discussion about the martial basis of T'ai Chi and ideally that practice should be done in that fashion.

Three thumped in for an 18 minute called set. Following the set, we went through the whole of sword form. Although no questions, I then took the relative new-comer to sword through positions through Agile Cat Seizes the Rat and demonstrated the next two positions. Further instruction to follow.
May 27, 2012
Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 144
Two blew in to the HEC parking lot for a warm-up and a 24 minute called set. After the set, we added Wave Hands Like Clouds to the student's repertoire. After a bit of practice of that, we called it a morning and one remained to practice a run through of the sword. Although quite pleasant, the wind was having its way with my tassel making the movements far more difficult than they needed to be.
No formal practice tomorrow, save possibly in my driveway at an undisclosed and yet to be determined time.

May 26, 2012
Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 143
Three thumped in to the parking lot of the HEC (building closed for maintenance) for a warm up and a 20 minute called set. Following the bare-hands set, one of the students remained and learned Turn and Chop, (transitional arm-break into) Step Forward, Deflect Downward, Perry and Punch, (other transitional arm-break into) Ward Off Right. We concluded our practices shortly after 9 AM.
May 25, 2012
Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 142
Four flopped in for a 24 minute uncalled set. After the set, there were questions on the transition out of Punch Groin and choke-holds (the latter having nothing to do with the former).
Following the bare-hands set, three remained to go through the sword set. After that set, we talked a bit about Block Up and Shoot the Wild Goose. More tomorrow.
Finally, I brought in my Netbook to review Parry, Block, and Punch. I believe all parties concerned are happy with how it 'should' look. How it looks now, may need so new practice on everyone's part. :-p

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 141
Four filed in for a 21 minute called set. Before the set, there was notable discussion of Parry Block and Punch in part one. Further review of Master Yang Jun is required. One student declared after the set that she had been studying the 10 Principles and was finding it very helpful in the separation of lifting the head and sinking the shoulders, etc.
After the bare-hands set, two remained for a run-through of the sword form. We worked more on Plumb Blossom much to the enjoyment and benefit of both there.

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 140
Three thumped in for a 26 minute uncalled set. Following the set, I requested a viewing of Needle at Sea Bottom (seemed fine) and Fan Through Back which needed a minor amount of adjustment with the left elbow.
After the bare-hands set, we went through the sword set once and called it a morning.

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 139
Five flounced in for a 14 minute called set. Focus is always appreciated and helpful.
After the bare-hands set, we did about 10 minutes of standing meditation which was very nice and finally, four of us remained for a stab at a once-through of the sword form while one watched.
Although we were certainly there for more than an hour, it was well worth it.

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 138
Three (eventually) thought their way through a 28 minute uncalled set this morning in the mostly deserted Allen Center. After the set, I requested a demonstration of Ward Off Right to Roll Back but was satisfied with what I saw. I did go on to comment that Needle At Sea Bottom is more a squat than a bend, though this was really a reminder as both participants did much better on the second iteration of this frame in the set.
Following the bare hands portion, we all did a quick run through of the sword form.

May 20, 2012
Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 137
Three thinned in to HEC 110 for a six minute uncalled set. Before the set, there was discussion of the understanding of Step Forward, Deflect Downward, Parry, and Punch. Following the bare hands set, all three remained for a couple of runs at the sword form with more detailed explanation of Black Dragon Wraps Around the Pole (both sides) and Wind Swirls the Plumb Blossom. There were various other corrections and explanations as well. It was a good start to a good day.
May 19, 2012
Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 136
Seven swept in to HEC 110 and then back out to the football field for a 22 minute called set. There was a bit of a disagreement about where we were in the middle of part 2, but that was resolved relatively quickly (and with no loss of blood) and we moved on.
After the bare-hands set, five remained for a run-through of the sword set and even though one had not been through the set before at all, he actually took to it fairly well. I gave him some exercises to practice and the more seasoned sword practitioners went through the last few positions again with the promise of more and better instruction once we returned to a 'real' floor.

Six swept in for a 23 minute called set. A student who's not been around for a while was also there. This is good news for both the group and the student.
After the bare-hands set, a different student asked to record me calling the sword set. Four of us ran through the whole set, or at least the portion of the set they individually knew. It was a great way to start a day of travel and I can honestly say I believe it has made a world of difference in my attitude at various issues throughout this day.

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 127
Five filigreed in for a 22 minute called set. It felt faster than that as I was calling it, but it worked out nicely.
After the set, three remained for a quick run-through with a sword, er, of the sword form. After that, it was off to the races, or at least off to work.

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 125
Four funneled in for a 7 minute uncalled set. Following the set, all remained for about 11 minutes of standing meditation. When that was complete, we took the time to go through the sword form up through Roc Spreads Its Wings and then again all the way to the end. The meditation was really nice.

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 124
Four flounced in for a 23 minute called set today. After the set, there was a question on the transition between Turn and Chop and Step Forward Deflect Downward Parry and Punch and also one on going into Ward Off Right.
After the bare-hands set and Q&A, three remained for a quick run-through of the sword form up through Swallow Picks Up Mud. After a review of Cartwheel Left and Right, I then added Roc Spreads Its Wings.
On a personal note, I'm noticing a few of my sword movements are getting closer to What Grand Master Yan Jun demonstrates. Although this bodes well, I still feel that I have much to learn.

Five filed in for a 20 minute called set, including two former students from several years ago. After the bare-hands set, three practiced sword a couple times through up two Roc Spreads Its Wings. We then added Scoop the Moon from the Sea Bottom and Embrace the Moon.
After the sword set, I worked with the two returned students showing them some of the changes from when they first learned the form.

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 122
Six slid in to HEC 110 for a 23 minute called set. During the set, we encountered numerous interruptions in out practice due to about eight people traipsing in and out of the room collecting equipment from one of the closets. They were very rude both in the fact that they did not respect our room reservation and in their general loud and unrestrained behavior.
After the set, I showed my former student from the Y evening class the next few moves of part 2. I believe I had shown him before and he seemed to grasp them quickly. I look forward to completing his basic understanding of the form if he can continue to make the practice sessions.
Five remained to go through the sword form. I reviewed last weeks additions of Heavenly Horse, Raising the Curtain, Cart Wheel Left and Right, and Swallow picks up Mud. I also went over Roc Spreads Its Wings. More tomorrow, I hope.

Six slipped in this morning for an 18 minute called set. It was an even divide of men and women today, including my former UW student and a student returning after foot surgery. It was really nice to see everyone there today. :-)
Before the set, there were questions on the changes/corrections since the last seminar so I spoke briefly on Strike Tigers, Double Wind to the Ears, Turn and Sweep Lotus and (later) on Bend Bow Shoot Tiger.
Following the bare-hands set, four remained for a once-through of the Sword Form up through Swallow Picks Up Mud and two finished the form.

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 118

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 116
Three tipped into HEC 154 for an 8 minute uncalled set followed by a couple of practices of the sword form. There was a question on Fair Lady Works at Shuttles (bare-hands) and numerous questions on the sword. I was able to teach Heavenly Horse Flies Over the Waterfall.
Following the teaching, two remained for a saunter through the whole of the set, including instruction on Shoot the Wild Goose.

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 115
Three threw in to HEC 154 for a 24 minute called set, today. After the called set, all three of us went through the Sword form up through Shooting Star Chases the Moon. We then added Heavenly Steed Flies Over the Waterfall and Raising the Curtain. Finally, one other and I went through the whole of the sword form. This was a good way to start the morning.

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 114
Two tromped in for a 15 minute uncalled nearly-silent set today. I found it quite interesting to note that the only sound was from my right knee popping on some of the kicks and the nylon of my pants brushing itself from time to time. It must have been the conversation about ninjas before the warm-up. ;-)
After the bare-hands set, the two of us ran through (no pun intended) the sword form and briefly reviewed the left hand on Lion Shakes Its Head and Tiger Holds Its Head.
---
Practice should be in HEC 154 tomorrow and our advanced T'ai Chi class will also continue in 154 for the next two Wednesdays at the standard time.

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 113
Two tiptoed in for a 25 minute called set today. After the set, there was a question about Fist Under Elbow after which I talked about keeping the hips compressed, leaning the torso forward those few degrees to keep from leaning back in certain positions.

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 112
Three threw in today (including a former student of mine from 4 years ago) for a 24 minute called set. Following the set, I discussed just a few of the changes since this student last studied with me.
After the bare-hands set, all three stayed but only two practiced the whole of the sword form.
---
We had our last official sword class this evening. It went fairly well culminating in Shooting Star Chases the Moon. I have hopes and plans of continuing the class in a different location for the next two Wednesday evenings as well as on the weekend.

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 111
Only one showed up this morning for a 21 minute set. Regrettably, I didn't make it.
The evening class was also quite small with only one attending. I emailed my supervisor requesting a cancel on this 8 week session. After the bare-hands practice (which ran late in getting the one student up to the Single Whip just before Wave Hands Like Clouds in part 2), there was a bit of sword practice.

Three threaded their way through the HEC to room 110 for a warm up and a 22 minute uncalled set. Following the set, there was a question about Lift Hands and Step Forward.
Following the bare-hands set, we reviewed the last several positions we learned in the sword form and then went back and ran through the set. Further questions and review ensued followed by the learning of Dusting in the Wind by two and then Push the Boat With the Current by one.

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 101
Three trooped in to HEC 110 this morning for a 20 minute uncalled (but not uninterrupted) set. Early on in part 3, three people trooped through the room trying to get into 154 but that door was locked.
Before the set we discussed some of the changes in positions, specifically Double Wind to the Ears (seat the wrists), Turn and Sweep Lotus (weight distribution, left arm movement) and Bend Bow Shoot Tiger (right hand position). After the set, we went through the latter two of those again.
After the bare-hands section, we moved on to work on the sword form. I re-taught Black Dragon Whips Its Tail and Green Dragon Comes Out of the Water. Later, I taught Tiger Holds Its Head and Wild Horse (Mustang) Jumps Over the Ravine.

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2012 Day 100
Phew! I finally made it back to morning practices today. Between various trips and conferences and trying to get used to getting up early again, it's been a while.
There were two this morning for 22 minute uncalled set. I was able to maintain my head up, my gaze on the horizon throughout almost all of the form. I could tell a significant difference in energy flow already by the first brush left knee.
After the set, Charlie and I went through the sword form up through the second Lion Shakes Its Head and then reviewed the positions after Birds Lodge in the Forest.
This was an excellent way to start the day!

At least I made it to my University class today. After the class, I was also able to get in a good sword practice.

Sword class this evening went well though we were shy a few participants. We did make it up through the second Lion Shakes Its Head, though the latter of those will need a re-visit on the footwork.
