Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2013 Day 140
Three threaded their way onto the tennis courts north of the Allen Center this morning for a chilly warm-up and a 24 minute uncalled set. I was vaguely surprised at how difficult the set felt. I suspected the 'ground' was concrete and it was confirmed by the exhaustion and inability to execute acceptable techniques, especially techniques requiring one leg in the air. It's been a long time since I've done a set on concrete but not much has changed as far as the effects.

Two tramped to the front yard of the Allen Center for half of the warm up. The other half was finished in the basement of the Allen Center along with a 22 minute called set. It was a little cramped, but we got the job done. Following the set, there was some discussion primarily of Empty Solid Stance in applications like Golden Cock Stands on One Leg and Repulse Monkey.
After the 103, 1 stepped outside for a short but satisfying sword set.

Five foraged into the lawn just south of the Allen Center for a warm up and 23 minute called set. The ground where I was standing was rather uneven, but I managed to maintain my balance throughout the form. After the set, there was some discussion of the left hand in Brush Left Knee and the transitory stance in Step Forward, Deflect Downward....

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2013 Day 136
Four flitted around a while before coming to rest in the parking lot just south of Pray/Sims Hall. Our normal room is having the floor re-done so we are at the mercy of the weather this week. So far, so good. It was cool, though a bit damp which is why we moved to asphalt instead of grass. It was far safer than the side-walks. The grounds crew were out and about and they almost never drive in the parking lot. :-p The 21 minute called set went well, even though the surface was a bit unusual. After the set, there was brief discussion of Ward Off Left.
Following the 103, two remained for a rapid run at the saber. The new surface was quite enlightening.

Seven (eventually) showed for a 25 minute called set. There were numerous distractions both in and outside my head, the latter causing me to occasionally mis-speak a couple of frames. Once I was able to dispense with the internal distractions, the externals also stopped being an issue. Following the set, I made some comments on Play Lute, Apparent Close Up, and Brush Knee.

Finally, four (five?) remained for a nice slice of sword and a mild chunk of saber. An excellent way to start a Sunday.

Following the 103, three remained for about 15 minutes of Yang-Family Push Hands. We started working on the "Four Corner" vertical circle with generally good results.
Following push-hands, all three remained for a moderately-paced sword set. The were questions on Shoot the Wild Goose.
Finally, we ended our morning practice with two runs through the saber set with numerous fine-points polished. All-in-all, it was a very pleasant and very rewarding morning of practice.

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2013 Day 103
Six sauntered in to the Allen Center this morning for a 21 minute called set. It felt fast to me, but it's what we had time to do.

In the University class, one of my advanced students led the warm-up while I assisted another student with an unrelated issue. Post warm-up, I read a list of names for whom attendance is going well. Any name not read has issues which should be addressed.
The beginners continued their review work up through all of Grasp Birds Tail while the more advanced group worked up through Crossed Legs.

In the evening class, only half of the official students showed up, but we worked up in part 3 through the Single Whip before Fair Lady Works at Shuttles.
This may be the last day of this class for this season. I only had the 4 and to my knowledge, all are bowing out for now.

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2013 Day 101
Seven eventually sauntered in to HEC 110 for a 23 minute called set. We definitely got off to a rocky start due largely to my tardiness.
After the 103, we worked on some applied T'ai Chi, primarily the strike of Brush Knee into a shield bag and the deflection of Wave Hands against a focus pad. Most there seemed to enjoy this.
Finally, three remained for a casual cavort through the sword form. Saber will wait for Wednesday.

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2013 Day 100
Eight entered HEC 110 this morning for a 30 minute called set. I knew that some struggled with the length, but I think the struggle was good and the students stronger for it.
Following the 103, seven stayed for about 20 minutes of single-hand push-hands with varied partners. This was also quite enjoyable.
Finally, three remained for a couple slices of the saber form. I would have stayed longer, but other duties required my attention.

In the University class, attendance was low, only just over half showed up. I assume it was a combination of the rain and my taking attendance on Thursday last. Well, I took attendance again and am likely to continue most days.
The beginners received instruction on the breathing up through Push. They also received a much needed reminder on their stance in Ward Off Left. While I took care of this, the people in part 3 worked on White Snake Puts Out Tongue and continued through Step Forward, Deflect Downward, Parry, and Punch into Grasp Birds Tail and Single Whip. They should be ready for the second Wave Hands Like Clouds on Thursday.

In the University class, after a slightly abbreviated warm-up, the 26 students of my normally 70+ student class worked on some self-defense moves and escapes. We also talked briefly about the appropriate use of martial techniques, focusing on the idea that simply because you can do something doesn't mean you should or that it is morally permissible to do so. A long-time student approached me after class and indicated that doing something simply because one could (i.e. Might makes Right) was often termed a 'vulgar display of power.' I rather like that term and may have to use it in future.

When I woke up today, I actually felt considerably less than healthy, but even by the end of part 1, I was starting to feel a bit better. By the end of part 2, everything felt almost normal again and by the end of part 3, I felt better than I have in a while. Although I did not have the time to practice any weapons, the 103 today was quite pleasant.

Four remained for a couple of runs at the sword form, one slow, one less slow, the latter coming in at about 4 minutes. There were questions on Shoot the Wild Goose and Present the Ivory Tablet.
The same four remained for a couple of slashes at the early part of the saber form. We reviewed up through Look Left, Gaze Right, and Split before moving into White Crane Spreads Wings; Step Forward to Five Element Palm.

Three threatened the utter stillness with movement of Qi Gong and T'ai Chi. A called 15 minute set, created, destroyed, ephemeral, as are all things under sun and moon, yet the lingering effects could last an eternity. Prior to the set, there was discussion of minor modifications in Wave Hands Like Clouds, Separate Feet, and the transition from Parry Block and Punch into Ward Off Right. There were also questions on the transition from White Crane Spreads Wings to Brush Left Knee. Following the set, I made some comments about posture in Repulse Monkey.

Three remained for some detailed work on Carry Tiger, Diagonal Single Whip, and Part the Wild Horses Mane. The width of stance in that last one is quite tricky.
Finally, two stuck around for a run through of the sword set and some additional practice of the Saber.

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2013 Day 38
Today was difficult. After being shown by signage that our normal room was closed today, two of us attempted entry into the Allen Center which was supposed to be open at 8:00 AM. It was not. Even after a couple of phone calls to appropriate people, the establishment didn't open until almost 8:40 by which time, there was only me. So, 1 waited semi-patiently and then swept the studio, warmed up, ran through several saber sets, and finally did a 3.5 minute bare-hands set. The last of these was rather sloppy today.

We also talked about/reviewed the usual positions of the hand/wrist (seated, unseated, reverse seated). Push was pushed to next week.

One wiggled in for a warm-up followed by a nine minute 103 form and some saber slashing. The flow of the 103 was really nice today, interspersed with explosive intent. The saber also felt good.
I left a shade early, just in time to watch the upper edge of the sun clear the horizon through a copse. The shades of pinks and oranges streaking across the sky simply cannot be captured by film or digital means.

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2013 Day 34
Four flung themselves into a warm up and a 12 minute called set, today. Following the set, there were questions on Fair Lady Works at Shuttles.
After the 103, 3 remained for 10 minutes of standing meditation which was very nice.
Finally, 2 remained for a 4-ish minute sword set. I find my focus is often elsewhere on Tuesdays after standing. Perhaps reordering the activities would help, though that might cause some students to want to leave before the standing. Perhaps I'll just deal with it. ;-)

In the University class, one of my advanced students took the students learning part 3 through the remainder of Carry Tiger, Return to Mountain. I believe he started them on Diagonal Single Whip, as well. In the mean time, I worked with the beginners on a solid review of Ward Off Left and Ward Off Right. We also talked about Tiger Mouth, open armpits, and drooping elbows.

Two tramped in from the sub-zero temperatures for a 17 minute uncalled set. Following the set, there was some discussion of the second Turn and Kick With Heel and White Snake Puts Out Tongue.
After the 103, both remained for a 4.5 minute sword set. This felt really good to me today, as did the 103. Kua focus is a wonderful thing.

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2013 Day 29
Three threaded in for a 17 minute uncalled set. There were no questions and the only comment I had planned to make seemed to have gotten muddled by the time I reached the end of the form.

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2013 Day 28
No one braved the excessive snow, freezing rain, or other incredibly hazardous conditions this morning. I can't blame them one bit.
---
Saber class started this evening, though it started a bit late. After warm up, we talked about how the saber differs from the sword, how to hold the saber and then finally got into Step Forward to Seven Stars. There were many people missing, so instead of going too much further, we used the last 10 minutes to review some push-hands. If time permits, I would like to do this more often.

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2013 Day 27
Four fled the icy sidewalks and streets for the relative safety of the Allen Center for a pleasant warm-up followed by a 7 minute called set. After the 103, three remained for an 11 minute standing meditation session. Upon completion, two remained for a 5 minute called sword set and finally 1 chopped his way through a brief saber set.

In the evening class, there were no rank beginners, so I took the more advanced people up through Wave Hands Like Clouds in part 2. Technically, we had done this last week, but it was quite rushed. This time, we spent more time with the individual components.

Tai Chi at the Allen Center - 2013 Day 23
Three thronged through fresh snow (and much warmer temperatures) to warm-up and thus execute a 22 minute uncalled set. The flow for me today was amazing. I really focused on keeping my Kua open which seemed to empower everything else that much more. I look forward to continuing this experimentation.
Following the 103, two remained for a 4.5 minute called sword set. This also felt good today.
Finally, 1 remained for a whack at the saber form. It was quite enjoyable as well.

Two tumbled in from the frigid (-11F) temperatures and mild winds for a nice warm up followed by some comments and basic instruction in T'ai Chi. The new student has not studied T'ai Chi before, but may well be trying out T'ai Chi in the learn-by-doing method.
After the instruction, one remained for a quick run through of the sword form and a slightly more intentful practice of the saber.

The evening class was again pleasant. Six sauntered in for a nice warm-up. The more advanced group worked on part 2 with my esteemed colleague while I worked with the two beginners on bow-stance and bow-stance walking. We also started the form. Over all, it looks like a good group. :-)
